The biggest trend in
jewelry this summer is clear, literally. Bangles, beads and baubles made of transparent materials are the must-have accessory for those looking to give their look an instant ’07 update. Here’s your guide to everything you need to know to about pulling off this trend in style.

What it is: Transparent jewelry is made from many materials, such as Lucite plastic, cubic zirconia and crystal. Whether you prefer smooth organic shapes or something more multi-dimensional, you’ll find every type of jewelry available in some clear form or another.

Why we love it: The futuristic trend that was all over the runways is most user-friendly when injected into a real world wardrobe in small doses. Touches of the transparent have made their way onto shoes and bags as well, but clear jewelry is by far the chicest choice — who wants the contents of their handbag on display 24/7? Clear jewelry mimics the same back-to-the-future feel as Balenciaga’s goggle-size sunglasses and lamé leggings, but in a much more flattering and easy-to-wear way. And if you think sporting an armload of mod-looking bangles is your only option (not that there’s anything wrong with that!), think again. There are many unexpected, ultra feminine styles too. The biggest bonus: clear jewelry goes with everything in your closet and works on women of all shapes, sizes and colours. Think of it as the new black.

Where to get it: Tons of designers and retailers have hopped on the see-through bandwagon, from high to low price points there is definitely something for everyone. If you can indulge in a splurge, check out, the eye-catching faceted chain link necklaces and knuckle dusters at

When (and how) to wear it: According to Daniel Espinosa, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to wearing clear jewelry. The Mexican-based jewelry designer explains: "I don’t think there’s a "right" way to wear it, as long as you feel comfortable with it. Jewelry is meant to make you smile." However, he does warn, "The piece shouldn’t wear you, you should wear the piece." To strike the right balance, keep the style of the piece in mind. Pair bolder accessories (such as chunky necklaces and rings) with simple clothing and solid colours. Streamlined bangles and earrings are better suited to the popular graphic prints of the season. Espinosa’s current favourites are his oversize rings, and he suggests wearing them with plain neutrals, like black or white. "They’ll just pop. I definitely designed the rings as evening cocktail pieces, to be the talking piece of the night," he says.

So, slip on something clear and get ready to be the talk of the town.
