ELLE Canada at the official and super-exclusive Dîner en Blanc event in Toronto’s Fort York
By Ava Baccari and Noah Lehava
The Gatsby-esque dinner scene at the Fort York. The first rule of
Dîner en Blanc—you don’t talk about where Dîner en Blanc will be held. That’s been the tradition of the top-secret all-white flash dinner party since it started in Paris in 1988 (it’s since seen revivals in London, New York, and last year’s test run in the Distillery District-set soirée in Toronto).
There are a few more strict traditions in place says Jessica Tan, one of the Toronto leg’s event organizers, who spoke with us last night in the all-white (naturally) media tent of this year’s chosen spot: Fort York National Historic Site. “Wear white head to toe and bring your table and chairs—it’s taking the everyday picnic to another level. Chic, elegant and very sophisticated,” says Tan, clad in a creamy white peplum Topshop cocktail dress. Don’t forget your baguettes and chocolate-dipped strawberries (and wine, of course).
Getting spoiled with our own dîner in the media lounge. We got the email revealing the location at 6:28 P.M. last night while receiving rock star-royal blowouts at
Yorkville’s Blo Dry Bar and quickly dashed off in a cab. Despite the rain, guests—who had also just found out the secret spot— toting chic picnic baskets and lawn chairs rolled in for the classy dinner party (and our hair held up for the rest of the night, thanks Christina and Alysse!). With 1400+ dinner guests in attendance, the sea of white and candlelight was truly a magical and transcendent vision. “I like the uniqueness that everyone brings to it—you see the long gowns, the short, fun skirts. I saw lots of bows, feathers—very vintage vibes. I think I saw a wedding dress somewhere!” says Tan. Next year, the guest list will grow—attendees must be invited by a guest of the previous year or sign up on the waiting list—which already leaves us taking bets for next year’s locale. We’ll see you next year!
