To define Miley Cyrus’ fashion sense by a single style would be a near-impossible feat. That being said, there is one word that encapsulates the energy that lingers no matter how many wild costume changes she goes through — unapologetic.
The “Flowers” singer has come a long way since living a double life as Hannah Montana on Disney Channel’s eponymous series, and her journey in the limelight has given us front-row access to her ever-changing fashions. If we had to put a label on it, we’d say her current sense of style falls somewhere between edgy, eclectic, and uniquely Miley. Whether she’s wearing a risqué rock ‘n’ roll grunge get-up or dripping in Saint Laurent sequins, she is committed to every look through and through and she’s got range. Below, observe the evolution of her versatile style via 15 of her best outfits throughout the years.
2006, Country Music Awards
As the daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus and goddaughter of Dolly Parton, Cyrus has got some serious country roots — so it was no surprise that she was already walking the red carpet at the 40th Country Music Awards in 2006. The then 13-year-old wore a multicoloured mermaid dress that foreshadowed some eclectic fashion choices she’d make years later.
2009, Teen Choice Awards
Layered in silver chain jewelry and a studded black belt overtop a white tank and sequin mini skirt, we begin to see early glimpses of Cyrus’ rebellious side at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards. And if her sense of fashion weren’t enough of a clue about what was to come, her “controversial” performance of “Party in the USA” during the show confirmed that this pop star was outgrowing her days at Disney.
2010, Academy Awards
In 2010, Cyrus glammed it up for the Oscars red carpet wearing a custom champagne-coloured strapless gown made by British designer Jenny Packham. The dress featured a satin bodice and a cinched waist that flowed into a beaded floor-length skirt that surely served as inspiration for prom dresses worldwide that year.
2012, Out and About
Anyone with a Tumblr account during in 2012 will recall that Cyrus’ street style was something to behold that year. A crop top (or band tee) of some sort, a flannel around the waist, high-waisted denim shorts, combat boots, and a pair of round sunglasses was the “Miley” look that year — topped off with an iconic “Miley bun” that we were all dying to emulate.
2013, Met Gala
At the 2013 Met Gala, the theme was Punk: Chaos to Creation — and Cyrus fully understood the assignment. Openly embracing her edgy sense of style, the “Wrecking Ball” singer opted for this custom Marc Jacobs fishnet gown accessorized with a set of studded rings, a rock ‘n’ roll red lip, and, of course — a head full of platinum spikes.
2015, MTV Video Music Awards
Coming out of her Bangerz album phase and into her Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz psychedelic rock era, Cyrus attended the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in this risqué metallic Atelier Versace ensemble. The look featured thigh-high silver boots, a chandelier “skirt”, and silver suspenders worn as a top.
2017, Video MTV Video Music Awards
Serving straight up Elvis Presley, Cyrus wore this electric blue custom co-ord designed by Jeremy Scott to the 2017 VMAs to usher in a new musical era ahead of the release of her Younger Now album. From the biker jacket to her flared pants, the whole ensemble was blinged out with studs and rhinestones — with hoop earrings to match.
2018, Met Gala
From bold colourways to classic black, Cyrus proved she can do it all at the 2018 “Heavenly Bodies” themed Met Gala wearing this slinky Stella McCartney dress with a plunging neckline that allowed for her signature stacked jewelry statement to shine through.
2018, Spotted in New York City
We’ve already established that Cyrus is a street style icon — and in 2018 she solidified her position as such on the streets of New York City with this two-piece plaid suit and an on-trend Emma Brewin bucket hat, paired with a DIY t-shirt that read “Protect kids, not guns” making both a fashion and political statement.
2019, Vanity Fair Oscar Party
Clearly partial to a plunging neckline, Cyrus brought a little edge to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party red carpet in 2019 by wearing this sexy sequined Saint Laurent gown and a Bvlgari Serpenti necklace with matching dangling earrings.
2019, Met Gala
Cyrus showed up to the 2019 Met Gala wearing more sequins and more Saint Laurent — and the look was a total blast from the past. For the “Camp: Notes on Fashion” themed event, she wore this angular black and emerald number that was evocative of an outfit she wore during her days of dressing up as Hannah Montana. And what could be more camp than that?
2020, MTV Video Music Awards
For her first red carpet appearance of 2020 since the start of the pandemic, Cyrus wore this strapless, sheer Mugler dress with matching opera gloves — well ahead of the current opera gloves overload — to the 2020 VMAs. Her platinum mullet, red lip, and choice of black clothing would soon become symbolic of her Plastic Hearts rock album era.
2021, Miley's New Year's Eve Party
What is Miley Cyrus if not extra? Arriving at her Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party special in 2021, the “We Can’t Stop” singer came ready to get down in this whimsical get-up by Dolce and Gabanna. Bedazzled bralette? Check. Rainbow feathered jacket? Check. Bejeweled mini skirt? Party pumps? Check!
2022, Miley's New Year's Eve Party
At her New Year’s Eve party back in December, Cyrus brought in the new year with total glitz and glam (as one should!) when she wore this vintage Bob Mackie fringe gown on stage and paired it with a shimmery pair of golden heels. She knows how to party in style.
2023, Gucci x ESV Album Release Party
Arriving at Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura in Beverly Hills to celebrate the release of her latest album Endless Summer Vacation with the Italian luxury label, Cyrus pulled all of the stylistic elements she has come to love over the years into this one look. Meaning — there was a daring black dress, standout sequins, and a statement coat involved. It was quintessentially Miley.
