Best and Worst Dressed at the Grammys 2019: Editors Weigh In
by : Erica Ngao- Feb 11th, 2019
ELLE Canada editors discuss all the best and worst style at this year's Grammy Awards.
Best: St. Vincent in Viktor & Rolf Haute Couture
Vanessa Craft, Editor-in-Chief
I don't want boring at the Grammys — I like it when musicians dress a little kooky. Rock stars should be outrageous! But: that doesn't mean they shouldn't also be stylish. This Viktor & Rolf satin white tuxedo jacket with sculptural ruffles works so well because it's a mix of playful details, a strong statement silhouette and it tells you exactly who St. Vincent is an artist.
Worst: Heidi Klum in Stéphane Rolland Haute Couture
Carli Whitwell, Managing Editor
Heidi Klum's Stephane Rolland minidress felt like a look I've seen again and again on her. Perhaps if she switched up the shoes for booties and put her hair up I may have liked it more, but it fell flat for me.
Best: Miley Cyrus in Mugler
Carli Whitwell, Managing Editor
You can't go wrong with an oversized black tux — especially when it's Mugler! — which is why my Grammys' best dressed is Miley Cyrus. I loved the kicky cropped flare trousers, but wish she had worn pumps instead of sandals.
Best: Janelle Monáe in Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture
Ciara Rickard, Production and Copy Editor
Janelle Monáe found the sweet spot between edgy and crazy with this gorgeous, sculptural look by Jean Paul Gaultier.
Elaine Jyll Regio, Fashion and Market Editor
You would think the sharp shoulders and hat brim would be overpowering but not on Janelle. It's fashion forward, sexy and proves yet again that Janelle is one of the few artists that has the power to pull off this kind of look.
Worst: Charlie Puth in Prada
Elaine Jyll Regio, Fashion and Market Editor
His suit looks really sloppy.
Best and Worst: Katy Perry in Balmain Haute Couture
Liz Guber, Style Editor
First things first, yes this dress was avant-garde and yes, the Internet has so far compared it to a paint roller, a snoball and a stack of cupcake papers. But remember the other dress that launched a thousand memes — Rihanna's infamous Guo Pei robe from the 2015 Met Gala. After four years, we're still not over it. I applaud Katy's bold choice when so many others played it safe.
Ciara Rickard, Production and Copy Editor
Katy Perry looked like the crocheted dolls that every grandma seems to have covering the spare toilet paper roll in the bathroom.
Worst: Nina Dobrev in Christian Dior
Liz Guber, Style Editor
The best word for this bland, beige Dior is afterthought. And the accessories are not up to the task of elevating the look.
Worst: Camila Cabello in Armani Privé
Elena Viltovskaia, Associate Art Director
The dress reminds me of those you might see in strip malls. It’s dated, unflattering and just boring. The colour and style do absolutely nothing for her…
Best: Jada Pinkett Smith in Roberto Cavalli
Elena Viltovskaia, Associate Art Director
Pretty bold choices here and yet Jada looks cool and effortless. Just from a practical stand point, it’s a difficult look to wear. There's so much going on — a deep V, drop waist, low back, embellishments, over-the-top feather train. I love the pairing of her slick pixie cut and minimal jewelry, which helps the dress feel fresh and modern.
Worst: Kylie Jenner in Balmain Haute Couture
Victoria DiPlacido, Beauty Director
She looked very uncomfortable in that outfit.
Best: Alicia Keys in Giorgio Armani
Victoria DiPlacido, Beauty Director
She looked so comfortable, confident, calm and herself, and that’s all you can ask for.
Best: Leon Bridges in Bode
Erica Ngao, Fashion Editorial Assistant
Most of the men played it safe at this year, and that's why I love this custom Bode suit. It put some much-needed personality onto the red carpet with the quirky doodles, a nod to the singer's home state of Texas. The hat and shoes kept the ensemble sharp and refined.
Worst: Ashlee Simpson in Georges Chakra Couture
Erica Ngao, Fashion Editorial Assistant
Everything you need for a glamorous, red carpet-worthy outfit was there — plenty of sequins, feathers and sheerness. But this jumpsuit captured my attention for roughly three seconds before I promptly forgot. It might have worked with better styling — a cool clutch or funky platforms — but this look felt bland.
Best: H.E.R. in Coach
Patricia Karounos, Editorial Assistant
H.E.R.'s sparkly Coach look paired with her trademark reflective sunglass was the perfect way to make her stand out at her debut Grammys.
Worst: Jennifer Lopez in Ralph & Russo Couture
Patricia Karounos, Editorial Assistant
I don’t necessarily think Jennifer Lopez’s bedazzled dress/wide-brim hat combo was bad, but it was a little too Carmen Sandiego. If your giant hat prevents you from getting a good hug in with Michelle Obama, it’s the wrong accessory!
