Best and worst dressed at the Globes: editors weigh in
by : ELLE Canada- Jan 9th, 2017
Best: Ruth Negga in Louis Vuitton
Vanessa Craft, Editor-in-Chief
This custom Louis Vuitton is everything a rising movie (and style) star should wear: it’s high fashion, fits her like a glove and makes a statement. The zipper details and t-shirt style sleeves separate it from the slew of princess dresses and classic gowns on the red carpet.
Best: Evan Rachel Wood in Altuzarra
Vanessa Craft, Editor-in-Chief
I didn’t think anyone would ever top my favourite menswear awards show look – that accolade belongs to Julia Roberts at the 1990 Golden Globes. This Altuzzara tuxedo is a fashion editor’s dream. On trend – menswear is huge trend for Spring/Summer and a truly fresh, modern approach to style.
Best: Claire Foy in Erdem
Sarah Laing, culture editor
Claire Foy’s Erdem dress is unashamedly “pretty” (pink! puffy sleeves!) and in a sea of slinky gowns that just felt fresh to me. And I don’t even care that a lot of people are comparing it to Drew Barrymore’s prom dress in Never Been Kissed.
Worst: Nicole Kidman in Alexander McQueen
Sarah Laing, culture editor
Any one of the four celebs (Nicole Kidman, Sofia Vergara et al) wearing those sort of half-sleeve / half cold-shoulder cut outs.
Best: Felicity Jones in Gucci
Danielle Campbell, designer
Felicity Jones in Gucci was a scene straight out of a fairytale. Bonus points for being styled by the incredibly talented and Canadian-born Leith Clark!
Worst: Carrie Underwood in Iris Serban
Danielle Campbell, designer
I’m a fan of ruffles, but this Iris Serban piece overwhelms Carrie and completely misses the mark!
Best: Caitriona Balfe in Delpozo
Liz Guber, associate fashion editor
I love a good fashiony-y moment at an awards show, and Caitriona Balfe’s Deplozo number was intriguing but didn’t look unfit for a red carpet.
Worst: Chrissy Teigen in Marchesa
Liz Guber, associate fashion editor
Sorry Chrisy Teigen, but I think we need to give it a few more years before attempting to bring back the peplum.
Best: Donald Glover in Gucci
Brian Fleming, associate art director
Anytime a man doesn’t wear a LBS on the red carpet I applaud them.
Worst: Sofia Vergara in Zuhair Murad
Brian Fleming, associate art director
Enough with the naked dresses already…
Best: Kerry Washington in Dolce & Gabbana and Sophia Webster
Carli Whitwell, special projects editor
In a sea of long gowns, Tracee Ellis Ross’ sculpted silver Zuhair Murad dress and Kerry Washington’s embellished cap-sleeved Dolce & Gabbana’s frock felt so refreshing. Long live bare ankles!
Worst: Drew Barrymore in Monique Lhuillier
Carli Whitwell, special projects editor
I love the idea of Drew Barrymore’s flapper-inspired Monique Lhuillier gown. But it needed some major tailoring. Next time, dear Drew.
Best: Naomie Harris in Armani Privé
Ciara Rickard, production editor
I can’t resist something shiny and sleek, so Naomie Harris’ shimmering gown was a fave for me.
Worst: Carrie Underwood in Iris Serban
Ciara Rickard, production editor
The ruffles on Carrie Underwood’s pastel-pink dress were just too much.
Best: Gal Gadot in Mugler
Elaine Regio, market editor
Gal looks radiant, and I love how the details of the dress compliment her baby bump. Also, you can’t go wrong with diamond and black onyx jewellery from Tiffany & Co.
Worst: Olivia Culpo in Zuhair Murad
Elaine Regio, market editor
Olivia looks like she walked right out of a look book. I don’t feel like there are any personal touches.
Best: Emma Stone in Valentino
Katherine Flemming, health & beauty editor
The stars on this glittering Valentino floated gracefully along her skin and paired beautifully with her subtle makeup and about-to-fall-out updo. I will never not support a gown that is dusted in stars, and this one felt like a subtle nod to the magical movie she was nominated for – La La Land.
Worst: Sienna Miller in Michael Kors
Katherine Flemming, health & beauty editor
Sienna Miller wouldn’t have been as awful had she listened to Coco Chanel and removed a few accessories (namely that limp hair ribbon and strand of pearls) before leaving her hotel room. This was a case of the styling killing the gown.
Best: Tracee Ellis Ross in Zuhair Murad
Victoria DiPlacido, associate beauty editor
Best dressed easily goes to Tracee Ellis Ross in that corset-inspired haute couture Zuhair Murad gown and stacks of rings, which made me 1) reconsider why I’ve written off all “body con”-style dresses, 2) vow to buy jewellery/actually wear it.
Worst: Brie Larson in Rodarte
Victoria DiPlacido, associate beauty editor
I love you Brie Larson and I love (love!) Rodarte, but this dress was underwhelming for me. Great red lipstick, though.
Best: Tracee Ellis Ross in Zuhair Murad
Kiera Spronk, fashion assistant
Tracee Ellis Ross managed to make this beautiful, embellished, couture dress look so effortless. I also love that she rocked her natural, curly pony for such a major red carpet!
Worst: Karrueche Tran in Dolce & Gabbana
Kiera Spronk, fashion assistant
There’s no denying how gorgeous Karrueche is, but this look screams tacky prom dress to me.
