Best and Worst Dressed at The Globes 2019: Editors Weigh In
by : ELLE Canada- Jan 7th, 2019
Here are our picks for the best and worst fashions at the 2019 Golden Globes.
Best: Thandie Newton in Michael Kors
Carli Whitwell, Managing Editor
I'm so over strapless, princess-y red carpet gowns. To me, Thandie Newton's custom Michael Kors column dress with its subtle cutouts and disco ball sparkle is the perfect Hollywood glam 2.0.
Worst: Amber Heard in Monique Lhuillier
Carli Whitwell, Managing Editor
Drop waisted dresses are hard to pull off even for a goddess like Amber Heard. Add to it the '80s hair and it felt messy and undone.
Best: Lucy Boynton in Celine
Victoria DiPlacido, Beauty Director
I love the cut of Lucy Boynton’s dress; it’s flattering, and paired with her super short Parisian-esque bob it looks perfectly modern. I think it would have looked a little dated had she had long, mermaid waves.
Worst: Kristin Cavallari in Zuhair Murad
Victoria DiPlacido, Beauty Director
I love a long sleeve in real life, but on a formal gown it look sloppy.
Worst: Alison Brie in Vera Wang
Victoria DiPlacido, Beauty Director
Nothing about this is working for me.
Best: Timothée Chalamet in Louis Vuitton
Liz Guber, Style Editor
2018 was not a boring year for men's red-carpet style, and we have Timothée Chalamet to thank (in part) for that. His Virgil Abloh-designed look was edgy, sharp and bold without looking try-hard or gimmicky.
Worst: Anne Hathaway in Elie Saab
Liz Guber, Style Editor
I have a friend, and this friend has an aunt who is completely obsessed with leopard print. Anne Hathaway's Elie Saab dress reminds me of that aunt's home decor. It's also proof that even the biggest runway trends don't always work on the red carpet.
Best: Joanna Newsom in Rodarte
Jed Tallo, Art Director
Yes this dress is campy and kitsch but on Joanna it works! It reflected her quirky personality and was a needed break from all the princess-y ballgowns.
Worst: Alyssa Milano in Cristina Ottaviano
Jed Tallo, Art Director
While the dress’ silhouette was perfectly fine the fabric chosen, however, looked like it had been accidentally singed and melted unto her body.
Best: Sandra Oh in Atelier Versace
Erica Ngao, Fashion Editorial Assistant
The Golden Globes co-host and award winner stole the show for me in this glamorous Versace gown. The side-swept up-do and dramatic shoulder detailing made Sandra shine every bit like the star she is — that’s why she’ll always be my person.
Worst: Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton
Erica Ngao, Fashion Editorial Assistant
Apart from the fit (which, it simply doesn't), this look is just fine (read: forgettable).
Best: Gemma Chan in Valentino
Patricia Karounos, Editorial Assistant
Gemma Chan's halter-neck Valentino gown — with secret shorts?! — would've made Astrid proud.
Worst: Amy Adams in Calvin Klein
Patricia Karounos, Editorial Assistant
Amy, I love you, but you can do better than this boring, too-safe look.
Best: Saoirse Ronan in Gucci
Natalie Brennan, Beauty Editorial Assistant
Saoirse Ronan looked stunning in a shimmering custom Gucci gown. I love that she always looks extremely classy — even when wearing an uber sexy dress (cue the plunging neckline and see-through skirt).
Worst: Jessica Chastain in Burberry
Natalie Brennan, Beauty Editorial Assistant
Jessica Chastain’s Burberry gown wasn’t my favourite, but what really didn’t do it for me was that raised ponytail that looked bizarre from the side and gave her an unflattering face shape from the front.
Best: Rosamund Pike in Givenchy
Elaine Jyll Regio, Fashion and Market Editor
A jacket over the shoulders for a red carpet look will definitely cause a divide. But where Rosamund got it right was the fit. The dress fit her like a glove and the jacket added another level of interest to what could have been a pretty basic look.
Worst: Heidi Klum in Monique Lhuillier
Elaine Jyll Regio, Fashion and Market Editor
The look is a little too prom for me.
Best: Claire Foy in Miu Miu
Ciara Rickard, Production and Copy Editor
Claire Foy looked radiant in her custom-made Miu Miu gown – it exuded classic glamour while the crystal embellishment gave it a fresh update.
Worst: Kate Mara in Miu Miu
Ciara Rickard, Production and Copy Editor
Kate Mara’s dress, also Miu Miu, just didn’t work for me. The jewelled bodice was unflattering, and the ruffle at the bottom of the gown reminded me of an ’80s bedskirt.
