Backstage at the MMVAs: Our behind-the-scenes diary
ELLE Canada‘s Ava Baccari and Noah Lehava in the press room.
By Ava Baccari and Noah Lehava Just like the tag team who hosted last night’s MMVAs, we as ELLE Canada’s editor and writer took on covering Toronto’s hottest award show as a pair. Tucked away from the street action and red carpet mayhem, we scoped out a spot at the 299 Queen Street MMVAs press room. Here’s the play-by-play of how our night went down:
5:02 pm: We hop in a cab and arrive at the MuchMusic headquarters and meander through the crowd and security to get to the press entrance.
5:20 pm: Armed with media badges and wristbands, we head to the media lounge and sneak chocolate-dipped oatmeal squares and Chardonnay before grabbing our
front row seats in the press room.
6:00 pm: We grab a quick peek of the red carpet as Down With Webster rolls up.
6:01 pm: Witness the magnitude of Bieber Fever up close was the teen-filled crowd carries jumbo-sized cutouts of their fave Stratford-born star.
6:02 pm: Spotted: MTV host Aliya-Jasmine Sovani before she makes her debut in 14-year-old
Hiba Allam’s glittery purple cocktail dress.
6:05 pm: We are gently ushered off the red carpet by MuchMusic staff. Better luck next year!
6:10 pm: Back to the caramel corn and chatting with our new friend Dan (
7:00 pm: Waiting for the first star to arrive.
7:35 pm: Still waiting…any star will do. Which celebs showed and which didn’t? Click here to find out:
8:00 pm: We momentarily leave our bags to hold down the fort while we grab a snack to settle our grumbling and impatient bellies.
8:10 pm: We scarf down our dinner of arugula goat cheese salad and pasta before we rush back to our spot. The press room fills up, and we’re feeling lucky that we snagged prime locale.
8:45 pm: Decked out from head-to-toe sequins (loved her sparkly purple Miu Miu pumps) eTalk host, Leah Miller steps out as tonight’s press room moderator. Cute moment: Miller pulls out her iPhone for a quick tweet—we spot her case, embellished with a candid photo booth snap of her and hubby, Dallas Green.
9:05 pm: A big personality and even bigger hair, the Queen of All Media, Perez Hilton greets his fellow press corps.
Degrassi alumni and current
90210 starlet, Shenae Grimes steps out in a custom-made (and slit way up to there) black, sheer Amanda Lew Kee number. Local fashion blogger
Jay Strut was at the Hazelton Hotel earlier that day getting Grimes red carpet ready.
10:58 pm: Jesse Metcalfe, dreamboat star of the new
Dallas series, charms the press room with his blindingly white smile and a quick bat of his long lashes.
11:05 pm: Awaiting the much-anticipated arrival of the Biebs, who Ava spotted busking for a crowd outside the Avon Theatre in his hometown of Stratford the day before the big awards show. Noah’s waiting for her photo-op with the Biebs too.
11:17 pm: Winner of three MMVAs, Carly Rae Jepsen arrives. Earlier in the night, Perez called her hit single "Call me Maybe" "addictive as honey-coated nuts" (which the press room was well-stocked with). We’d have to agree.
11:25 pm: No Bieber. Hopes for future arrival of Bieber dashed. (Him, as well as some of the big names we were hoping to chat with, never make it to the press room.)
11:34 pm: Co-hosts and OTT duo LMFAO send off the press in blinged-out kicks (and more clothes than they wore on stage). Redfoo holds a jumbo glass of OJ as SkyBlu calls out for his own to start off their after party on a sugary note.
11:59 pm: We snag one last box of caramel corn for the cab ride home and a late night blog post writing session.
