Sure, there’s teachers and books, but did you also know there’s
laminated leather skirtsuits and wooly,
oxblood red scarves when heading into the classrooms this fall season? While trig formulas come and go (mostly the latter), nothing stands out more prominently when reminiscing over school memories than those iconic first-day-of-school outfits. Just ask some of the top Canadian designers – we did, and they told us fond tales of Doc Martens and gold penny loafers. Here are their all-time fave first-day-back outfits, plus top
must-try looks this season from the Fall 2012 runways that will stay with you long after the school bells have rung.
Dean and Dan Caten, designers, DSquared2
Old-school fave outfit: "Back in 1982 – our freshman year in Arizona – with the thought of riding horses, we wore white jodhpurs, gold penny loafers and crisp white polos. Naturally, it did not go as well as we thought…!"
Back to fashion 2012: "For sure a rugby striped mink sweatshirt, a cropped pair of tight jeans, something sparkly – either shoes or
sunglasses. Naturally a great bag to tote your books and some colourful crocodile, please."

Lauren Bagliore
Old-school fave outfit: "My favorite all-time first day of school outfit was an above-the-knee sleeveless cocoa-coloured subtle A-line dress with simple princess seams that had a minimalistic silver metal buckle at the front. It wasn’t anything extraordinary, but was quite beautiful in its simplicity and had a modern ’60s feel about it. I would wear it with my mother’s vintage "Woodies" I dug-out from my Nana’s cellar, paired with a cropped, open-crocheted button-down sweater with glassy buttons. Looking back, I think that was quite sophisticated for a back-to-school ensemble – very chic and stylish – especially for a 7th grader!"
Back to fashion 2012: "Must have items for fall are leather or leather-like pieces and wool jacquards. I am especially loving our Kyoko Asymmetrical leather-like draped vest we did for fall worn over a meshed or textured knit, along with a signature Lauren Bagliore Warrior Wrap Coat or our Oversized Costanza Cocoon Coat in our beautiful Italian wool jacquards. These are
must-have items for A/W 2012 and will look brilliant on any body type."
Jeremy Laing
Old-school fave outfit: "Brown corduroy overalls and Ernie (as in Bert and Ernie) T-shirt. I was six."
Back to fashion 2012: "Personally, I need a sort of tailored hoodie, casual enough to wear everyday but that seems like a jacket."
MOON’s Jordin and Tamara Mimran
Jordin Mimran
Old-school fave outfit: "In junior high I wore khaki’s with a white oxford and a braided brown leather belt."
Back to fashion 2012: "A bright orange dress in a modern shape."
Tamara Mimran
Old-school fave outfit: "Plum and cherry plaid pants with a plum sweater and my Doc Martens."
Back to fashion 2012: "Definitely anything burgundy or plum, a great pair of boots and a colourful new handbag."
Martin Lim’s Pao Lim and Danielle Martin
Pao Lim
Old-school fave outfit: "This is so funny, we both thought about our brown corduroy fit-n-flared pant we had to wear in primary school!"
Back to fashion 2012: "Sleek pencil skirt in bright colours."
Danielle Martin
Old-school fave outfit: "I even had the brown corduroy jacket to were with!"
Back to fashion 2012: "Sheen off-white crop jacket."
