At Hermès it was a delightful wrap-trench jacket lined with stunning fluorescent lime, and at Emilio Pucci it was his signature bold collage of bright colours, with one particular orange crush satin crop-pant taking centre stage. DSquared² showcased spandex making a splash once again in a way that totally wiped out visions of the striped neon shorts in the 80s. This time around the fabricated fun was cut and designed into gorgeous thrill-seeking halters and teeny-tiny-bikinis in fluorescent greens and pinks.

Intense colour schemes on the runway have sparked a spring fad in fashion and while some make eek at the thought of relapsing the fanny pack era, this time around it may be something worth taking your skip-it out for!

“Bright colours in an outfit make the wearer appear more carefree, free-spirited and light-hearted than if they were in an all black ensemble,” says Karen Richter, the H&M Sample Room Manager.

Call it un-mellow yellow!
Flirtatious fluorescent yellow can be stunning. Venture out in a colour-dipped tube top paired with premium denim…or an intense neon yellow accessory will add sunshine to a power suit or classic white tee.

“Bright yellows and fuchsia seem to have been most popular on the runways,” says Richter. “For the brave, a spring coat or simple dress in these colours is nice, or for a more subtle look small accessories provide a great pop of colour.”

Electro-clash statements are perfect for ridding those winter blahs; it’s maintaining the right amount that will have you smooth styling.

“The best way to avoid looking tacky is not to overdo it with too much neon,” states Richter. “Just one or two small pops of colour mixed with basic neutrals is enough.”

Roll up your sleeves!
Hot hues must have the shape to support the trend this time around. No over-sized neon sweaters this season! Stay modern and sharp with your look. Pucci did it right with a classic woven button up that incorporated a cherry twist of neon pink cuffs.

“Pick bright coloured pieces done in simple modern cuts rather than going back to exactly what you had in your closet in the 80s to avoid looking ‘costumey,’” says Richter.

While Madonna has traded in her neon pink chiffon scarf for a black Versace dress these days, it’s refreshing to see that there is still a little room in fashion to be a true material girl once again.
