Last year, shoppers lined up for hours for Versace’s H&M collection, and they caused web havoc on the day Missoni launched at Target. This year won’t be any different with six covetable collections hitting stores in the first half of 2012. More than merely offering a cheaper designer alternative, the collaborations give one an opportunity to experiment with something new, whether it’s a designer or a new look all together. Because we can guarantee 99% of us don’t have anything in our closets even close to resembling one of Mary Katrantzou’s flamboyant frocks.

Designer collaborations: Jason Wu and Target

When: February 5th

Red carpet favourite Jason Wu is stirring quite a buzz with his Target collaboration, with many predicting a Missoni-esque website crash come February 5th as buyers all over the world log in to get their very own Wu. It echoes Wu’s ready-to-wear collections, with an abundance of feminine detailing like pleats and bows, and a soft palette of pastels and delicate florals. The collection features an array of classic ladylike canvas and raffia bags, with one tote featuring his muse, Milu the cat.

Designer collaborations: Mary Katrantzou and Topshop

When: February 2012

The extravagant multi-thousand dollar bubble dresses loved by Anna Dello Russo will be considerably more affordable, at least for a short period of time. Arriving in mid-February, Katrantzou’s Topshop collection will be just as striking as the hyper-realistic frocks she is known for. Katrantzou’s clashing prints and sculptural volumes are bound to allow for some fashion experimentation come spring.

Designer collaborations: ALDO and JW Anderson, Mark Fast, Libertine, and Preen

When: March 8, 2012

Come March, expect a quadruple treat from Aldo this spring with their “Rise” project featuring four mini collections. JW Anderson’s patchwork pointy pumps and feather adorned strappy sandals very much echo his Spring 2012 collection, while Mark Fast gives us a shoe interpretation of his signature open knit. Preen’s pixilated print appears in form of mules, and their love of geometry in form of angular block heel sandals. Fans of height will be attracted to Libertine’s striped sky-high wedge platform. Already launched in Selfridges in London, the Rise collection hits Canada in March. And at only $155 a pop, you’ll be tempted to get a couple.

Designer collaborations: Marni and H&M

When: March 8, 2012

H&M designer collaborations are always a huge deal, but no one would have ever guessed that quirky Italian brand Marni would make the roster. A complete opposite from Donatella Versace, designer Consuelo Castiglioni is about sweet as opposed to sexy, bohemian as opposed to flashy. Expect
‘60s geometric prints, tunic dresses, platform shoes, and chunky jewels. On March 8, H&M will see a long, long line — perhaps one filled with the most fashion insiders yet.

Designer collaborations: Diane Von Furstenberg and GapKids and babyGap

When: March 2012

Following Stella McCartney’s beloved Gap collections, Diane Von Furstenberg is set to release her first foray into the world of children’s wear, having recently conquered the world of homeware. The collection will include items for babies and girls from ages two to 14. Expect a colourful array of signature Diane Von Furstenberg prints, with perhaps a little wrap dress or two. It also promises such chic-ness, one might be tempted to try and squeeze themselves into kids’ size 14.

Designer collaborations: Trina Turk and Banana Republic

When: June 2012

Towards the end of the season, West Coast-minded Trina Turk will bring her beach-y attire to Banana Republic this summer with a 60-piece collection, including both apparel and accessories. This collaboration will focus on Turk’s penchant for sunny California style with Palm Springs serving as a key inspiration. Look forward to a
colourful collection, with tropical prints touching everything from short shorts, summer dresses, and even beach towels.
