Where better to officially start of this year’s
celeb-packed, fan-frenzied Toronto International Film Festival than at the swish
Ritz-Carlton? The hotel has been rolling out the red carpet this week for a bevy of A-list guests, and after weaving my way through paparazzi and a stream of black SUVs to get into the hotel, you could feel the energy buzzing on the first official day of TIFF.

I had to get the first peek at the hotel’s new elegant suites (only 4 in the entire hotel) that were finished literally hours before I stepped in. With a picture perfect view of the water and CN Tower, and a bathroom big enough to live in (I would stay in the giant soaker tub all day if I could), it’s easy to picture a full-length gown hanging in the closet and a celeb getting primped with hair and makeup here before hitting up a premiere.

On to the actual party in the ballroom – jazzy tunes played as guests nibble on sushi, sake, hand-rolled pasta, onion rings and carved beef, cheese and charcuterie – not to mention an impressive sweets table with mini red velvet cupcakes, macarons, cake pops and hand-crafted chocolates. Jesse Eisenberg was rumoured to be milling about, as was Canadian director Norman Jewison and actor Daniel Brühl. And peering out the floor-to-ceiling windows, I could catch the action as slick black Audis rolled up to the theatre across the street – flashbulbs going crazy while celebs stepped out of their cars onto the red carpet.
