Ocean Wise
As part of H PROJECT, an initiative that showcases sustainable products and brands, Holt Renfrew commissioned Michif artist Christi Belcourt and Ela brand designer Ela Aldorsson. The fruits of their collaboration? Water-lily-embellished clutches made from vegan leather and recycled water bottles. For each Editor’s Pouch sold, the retailer will donate $10 to Oceana Canada, which works toward protecting and restoring our oceans. “Most people don’t know that oceans provide us with 50 percent of our oxygen—water truly is life,” says Belcourt, who pays homage to the beauty of nature through her work.

SHOE-IN
Spring is in the air, which means we’re one step closer to sandal season. And COCLICO, a New York-based brand with a cult following— and a conscience—is full of inspiration. Not only does it boast comfort, quality and artful design (think shoes that turn heads and that you can actually walk in) but every pair is ethically and sustainably made in its small family-run factory in Spain using locally sourced materials. The brand’s credo is that luxury isn’t the ability to purchase endlessly but the privilege of being able to choose wisely. Take one look at its latest lineup and you’ll quickly discover how many wise decisions you’ll want to make.
GOOD READ
THE HARD CROWD, the latest book from accomplished American writer Rachel Kushner, is a collection of essays from the past 20 years that spans everything from literary journalism and memoir to cultural criticism. Fans of Kushner’s past work, including The Mars Room, The Flamethrowers and Telex From Cuba, already know and love the California native’s fierce, intelligent and vibrant style. This captivating new collection shares many of her fascinating personal experiences and offers more insight into her journey as a writer— which only highlights the scope of her talent. Out on April 6.
Spray of SUNSHINE
If you can’t get to the beach this year, then let LOUIS VUITTON bring it to you. The brand’s new scent, On the Beach, was created by master perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud and is designed to capture the essence of being in the sand and sun. (Sigh.) With notes of yuzu, neroli and cyprus and subtle hints of thyme, pink peppercorn and clove, this eau de parfum will bring to mind the feeling of water lapping at your feet and sun warming your skin. Each invigorating spritz is a burst of joy.

Spice GIRL
Aman Dosanj loves to showcase the Okanagan Valley’s bountiful products and produce, most notably in her farm-and orchard-to-table pop-up dinner series, the PAISLEY NOTEBOOK. But with the current pandemic restrictions, the young chef and entrepreneur quickly switched gears to focus on her Edible Adventures spice-blend line. With the aim of making Indian spices approachable and accessible, she not only offers custom blends but also provides ideas on how to use them and donates a percentage of the proceeds to various anti-racism organizations—all excellent reasons to spice up your life.

Gold RUSH
Canadian jewellery brand Mejuri has created a sweatshirt as part of its GOLDEN TOGETHER campaign, which showcases strong, empowering, inspiring women, including actress Annie Murphy, model and philanthropist Grace Mahary and Jenna Lyons, founder of the brand LoveSeen. All profits from the sales of the Golden Crew Sweatshirt will be donated to the Mejuri Empowerment Fund, created in 2020 to support the education of women and non-binary people and provide them with the keys to succeed and, in turn, support others.

LOSS & LIFE

In a music video for the new single “Run Away With Her,” SOOK-YIN LEE is wandering the bleak Toronto streets, searching for her missing other half. The award-winning Canadian filmmaker, musician, actor, visual artist and broadcaster often collaborated with her life partner, Adam Litovitz, on projects—including their celestial 2015 electroacoustic album, Jooj. Sadly, Litovitz passed away in 2019, but his music with Lee lives on in the pair’s new work, Jooj Two (out on April 9). Despite the circumstances surrounding its completion, this album, described as “an unapologetic dive into playful art pop and a document of a lost language between lovers,” is a celebration—Lee’s way of sharing Litovitz’s life and spirit with the world.
MEDITATIVE DESIGN
Partners Phoebe Sung and Peter Buer started Brooklyn-based COLD PICNIC, a line of textiles and home goods, back in 2010. With backgrounds in fine arts and fashion design, the couple’s contemporary, abstract, colourful works are influenced by film, art, interior design and nature. Their newest line of hand-tufted rugs, The Goldfish, is inspired by the Japanese animated fantasy film Ponyo, by Hayao Miyazaki, and the experience of being at home with their daughter for the past year. “The five rugs in this collection are our attempt to capture some of the playfulness, strangeness and innocence of both that film and raising a young child in these times,” explains the duo. With soft, soothing colours and simple, meditative patterns, these pieces will bring an ethereal touch to any home.

A BADU world
Musician, doula and…merch mastermind? ERYKAH BADU has been quietly building an online marketplace with more than just your average items. In addition to albums and livestreamed performances, Badu is offering fans coveted clothing basics with cool designs (including a self-portrait series created in collaboration with Toronto artist Jackie Musial), footwear, socks and crystal-infused water bottles as well as incense made from the ashes of her own underwear—which, for the record, keeps selling out.
