It can be overwhelming to navigate this world of products, media and content—should you buy that moisturizer? What TikTok shouldn’t you scroll past? Is that TV show really worth the hype? To help ELLE Canada readers stay in the know, we’re going to be sharing what we’ve been loving throughout the month—from skincare to clothing to TV shows. It’s the crème de la creme of recommendations.
Apple Watch Series 7
The Apple Watch Series 7— out on Friday, October 15, is a levelled-up version of its predecessor. It features a larger (and more advanced) display, enhanced durability, faster charging, new aluminum case colours and is updated with watchOS 8. It’s the most durable Apple watch yet, with a crack-resistant front crystal and maintains its all-day 18-hour battery life, which now charges 33% faster. The watch includes a new user interface optimized for the larger display, which offers greater readability and ease when using the device. The Apple Watch Series 7 comes in new colours including midnight, starlight, green, a new blue and (PRODUCT)RED— in addition to its existing colours.
Humanrace Moisturizer, SSENSE
As the colder months are approaching, it’s important to keep your skin plump and hydrated. Humanrace’s Humidifying Cream is the perfect solution. The facial cream, now available at SSENSE, is suitable for all skin types and features ingredients like snow mushroom, squalane, hyaluronic acid and tiger leaf extract, which are all designed to keep your skin’s natural barrier moisturized to tackle the day (or night) ahead of you. It’s also fragrance-free, cruelty-free and vegan.
Squid Game
This South Korean drama has been dominating our social media feeds throughout the past month. Squid Game is a nine-episode series on Netflix about a contest where 456 players of diverse backgrounds and financial struggles take part in a set of children’s games with deadly penalties, in order to win a cash prize. It’s suspenseful and exciting, while subtly commenting on the class disparity in South Korea. Squid Game is definitely a must-watch.
Ribbed Turtleneck in Bronze, Kotn
With fall in full force, wearing warm-toned garments is the move. This ribbed turtleneck from Kotn in Bronze, screams fall—and it’s sustainably made! The turtleneck’s stretchy ribbed material is chic and super comfy to wear throughout the season. If you’re looking for style inspo, it can be worn under a sweater as an extra layer or worn on its own for a pop of colour.
OXO Good Grips Salad Spinner
Popularized by Emily Mariko on TikTok, the OXO Good Grips Salad Spinner is the perfect kitchen tool to speed up your salad or veggie preparation. It’s a one-hand operation with a soft, non-slip knob and sturdy basket that makes vegetable or salad spinning extremely easy and ready to go in a few seconds.
@emilymariko Veggie prep for the week!
Checkmate Checkered Crochet Bucket Hat, HOTPOT VARIETY
A fun take on the bucket hat is this Checkmate Checkered Crochet Bucket Hat from HOTPOT VARIETY, a female-founded BIPOC-owned brand, based in Toronto. This hat is a staple and will add intrigue to any outfit. The brand was started by Jessica Papp (who handmakes all the hats) as a side hustle during the pandemic, but the business quickly turned into more as Papp gained momentum with her chic designs and quirky-coloured hats. HOTPOT VARIETY is currently being sold at Holt Renfew, which is a great feat for both Papp and her hats.
J. Hannah Nail Polish in “Compost”
Jump into fall with this nail polish from J. Hannah in ”Compost”—a rich and earthy deep green shade. J. Hannah’s vegan and cruelty-free nail polish formulas are made in Los Angeles without any harmful chemicals. “Compost” is sure to apply smoothly onto the nails and is also highly pigmented, which ensures long-lasting wear.
Menu Extra
If you’re ever in Montreal, Menu Extra is a trendy gastronomic project that relies on a vibrant and accessible approach to tableware and how we eat. The project has been on an upwards trajectory since its humble beginnings in mid-2020. Menu Extra’s team is made up of the quartet Francis Blais, Camilo Lapointe-Nascimento, Alexis Demers and Martin C. Pariseau, who are bringing their unique gastronomic vision to life from doing pop-ups all over the city to offering at-home meal kits. While Menu Extra is only available in Montreal, they’re planning on expanding nationwide in the next couple of years.
Friends That Break Your Heart, James Blake
The sweet sounds of James Blake on his fifth studio album, Friends That Break Your Heart, is something that can’t be missed. As usual, Blake’s vocals sound stripped back and raw, but what feels slightly different than his previous work is he deep-dives into his emotional state and feelings of isolation which is incredible to hear—and feels relatable. Blake’s partner, Jameela Jamil, also has a few songwriting credits on tracks like “Coming Back” (featuring SZA) and “I’m So Blessed You’re Mine”.
Gabby Sage (@gabrielasage)
San-Diego-based model and content creator Gabby Sage has been dominating her corner of the internet with her colourful feed. Sage is mainly focused on sharing her tips for sustainable fashion and living with her over 24,000 followers—through this, she’s been able to collaborate with conscious brands like Teva and Madewell. Sage is also Japanese-American and has used her platform to talk about mental health and racial injustices in BIPOC communities.
