Sad news: Downton Abbey will end next season

It’s nearly time for Daisy to hang up her apron for good, Lady Edith to endure one more unnecessarily awful plotline, and the Dowager one last withering zinger: It’s been officially confirmed that the sixth season of Downton Abbey will be the last.
Much as we threatened to boycott the show after Isis’ death this past season (who cares if she was 490 in dog years?!), this is sad news for anyone who found themselves (over) emotionally invested in the lives and loves of the Crawley family and their staff. #teamservant The reason for the show’s end is utterly practical (and no, it’s not because there’s not a whole lot else to do with the Bates after both of them have been in jail for murder): Apparently the majority of the casts’ contracts expire after six seasons, and they’ve all booked other work for after that date. There is a gilded lining to this cloud: After Downton ends, the show’s creator, Julian Fellows, is already lined up for a television series about New York in the Gilded Age, the era just before Downton Abbey picks up its story.
