The Darkness have topped the American Download Rock Chart after appearing in a Super Bowl advert.
The British rockers’ frontman, Justin Hawkins, had a spot in a 90 second ad for electronics company Samsung which aired during the NFL event – one of the most widely watched programmes on US TV – on Sunday (05.02.12).
Justin was shown in a a pink jumpsuit, singing the band’s trademark hit ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ as his guitar dropped from the sky, which led to the surge in downloads of the track.
He told The Sun newspaper: ”I’m pinching myself, but don’t worry, it’s not self-harm.
”I just can’t believe we’re at number one in the American download Rock charts after our Super Bowl appearance.”
Justin added the news is a great boost for the band’s current stateside tour.
He added: ”Ace way to start our tour over here, which is also kicking arse, or kicking butt as we say in the USA!”
The Darkness – who reformed last year – have also recently put the finishing touches to their new album, the follow up to 2005’s ‘One Way Ticket To Hell… And Back’, which Justin has said is inspired by their home town of Lowestoft in East England.
He said: ”Home is where the heart is. When you write songs, you need a grounding to set the stories in. There’s a lot about small-town life. The album has songs about stuff that’s happened to us in the town.”
