Primal Scream will not write any love songs for their new album.

The ‘Higher Than the Sun’ group are currently in the studio working on their tenth LP, and frontman Bobby Gillespie said his lyrics will be “emotional” but not in a sentimental way.

He said: “I’m pretty pleased so far with the words. I think I’ve got something to say, so I’d better say it. It’s just things that are personal to me, experiences I’ve had. Emotional stuff – but no love songs.”

The veteran rocker also bemoaned modern bands for not being opinionated, unlike his own group and the artists he listened to when he was younger.

He continued: “Some of it is a critique of pop culture, which is something I think is lacking in a lot of modern music.

“It seems that nobody’s got anything to say anymore.

“I got into Deerhunter and Panda Bear, and I like their music, but it’s kinda vague. And I guess that’s the attraction. Maybe people feel safe being vague. We grew up with punk, and it was anything but vague, y’know, ‘God Save the Queen’. I’m not saying things were better when I was a teenager, but it was a different aesthetic.”
