Lady Gaga paid tribute to Tony Bennett on his 85th birthday.

The legendary ‘I Left my Heart in San Francisco’ singer celebrated his birthday yesterday (03.08.11) and Gaga was among the cast of stars to wish him well.

In a video message she sung ‘Happy Birthday’, then said: “I miss you, happy birthday to you, happy 85th birthday. Have whisky for me, I wish I was there, I’ll leave my lipstick print on this glass for you,” before kissing a tumbler which appeared full of whisky.

Stars including Gaga have also paid a bigger tribute to the star by appearing alongside him on his ‘Duets 2’ album, released this week, in celebration of his landmark birthday.

They include classic singers such as Mariah Carey, Willie Nelson and Aretha Franklin as well younger stars including Carrie Underwood, Norah Jones and the last ever recorded performance by Amy Winehouse, on the track ‘Body And Soul’.

Tony told how he gave the younger musicians a taste of the old way of recording when they worked with him.

He said to AARP The Magazine: “I want to try and help the new artists to simplify.

“When I grew up, we were so prepared that by the time we did the record, we’d do it in three takes.

“They said, ‘Gee, we love performing like this! It’s so much simpler.’”

Tony has also expressed his upset over the passing of Amy, who suddenly and unexpectedly died at her home in London on July 23.

He said: “She was an extraordinary musician with a rare intuition as a vocalist. When we recorded together, she gave a soulful and extraordinary performance. I was honoured to have the opportunity to sing with her.”
