Foo Fighters have led tributes to those who died at the Pukkelpop festival.

Five people have been confirmed as dead and more than 70 were injured yesterday (18.08.11) after a severe storm caused a stage to collapse at the Belgian music event, leading to its cancellation.

Foo Fighters – who were due to headline – tweeted: “Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the tragic events at Pukkelpop.”

Katy B was another artist due to perform at the festival who has been left saddened by the incident.

She said: “Can’t believe the storm at Pukkelpop festival so sad that people have passed away love goes to those that are injured too.”

Travis Barker of Blink-182 highlighted the tragedy on his twitter page, saying his “heart goes out” to the victims.

He wrote: “Really sad bout Pukkelpop. Another stage collapses 2 dead & tons of people hurt. My heart goes out. Not supposed 2 happen at shows (sic).”

Organisers said in a statement the weather conditions were “very exceptional and could not have been predicted”.

They added in a statement: “Words are not enough. We have struggled with the decision to continue the festival. Therefore we have decided to cancel Pukkelpop 2011.”

Around 60,000 people were estimated to be in attendance at the festival.
