Florence Welch wanted to find the “ultimate hangover cure” in song.

The Florence and the Machine singer has been working on her as-yet-untitled second album – the follow-up to 2008’s ‘Lungs’ – and is proud of the way it’s turned out as it is “organic”.

She said: “There’s still the big themes: love, death, violence and guilt. But it’s come out in a more organic way.

“And partly that’s being in Abbey Road [studio] and really wanting to make a record that we could play as a band. It’s come out quite earnest. There’s big moments of confession in it, overcoming your demons, and trying to find in song the ultimate hangover cure.

“It’s come out quite cathartic, like, there’s the choice whether you want to throw yourself away and keep living your life in teenage abandon or whether you want to start doing things differently.”

Florence also explained how most of the inspiration for her songs come to her by chance.

She added to NME magazine: “A lot of the time when I’m writing, things will just appear. I was writing ‘What the Water Gave Me’ and this book on symbolism was lying around, and it had one of [artist] Frida Kahlo’s self-portraits on. It’s nice to mix the ordinary with the extraordinary.”
