Bowling for Soup have a sensitive side to their songs, but “can’t help” being funny.

The ‘1985’ group have their own lyrical style and are known for their humorous takes on high school melodrama, attempts to impress girls and, in one song, an open letter to actress Megan Fox, but singer Jaret Reddick insists they have a more sentimental side too.

He told BANG Showbiz: “If you listen to ‘Ohio (Come Back To Texas)’ that shows us the tongue in cheek side to us, but it’s not novelty, it shows there is a sensitive side to what I’m trying to say – I’m not trying to be funny all the time, but sometimes I can’t help it.”

Jaret is the main lyricist in the group, but while he has established his own set of rules, he admits he has occasionally broken them – in once case leading to one of the band’s biggest hits.

He added: “I have to steer the lyrics the lyrics, because I write like I talk, and I have certain rules that I follow, like I don’t like songs which say ‘they’ in them, because I’m always like, ‘well, who are they?’ And funnily enough one of the songs that has got on the most movies and on TV and stuff is a song called ‘Greatest Day’, which actually breaks that rule.

“And I always laugh at myself whenever I say, ‘No, we can’t say ‘they’,’ then I’m like, ‘Man, I hope they don’t know about the song ‘Greatest Day’, because then they might call me out.”

Bowling for Soup’s 11th album ‘Fishin’ For Woos’ is out now.
