Surprise, surprise, the start of a new year can be tough. Maybe you’ve got the post-holiday blues, or are dreading the back-to-school/work slog, or are already feeling the pressure of those resolutions you made. No matter how committed you may be to seeing those New Year’s resolutions through, it’s easier to fail than to succeed. In fact, it’s estimated that only 8 per cent of people actually keep their resolutions. So, if you’re like us and will take help from wherever you can, turn on these TV shows to keep your mind — and goals — on track.

If your resolution is related to health and fitness…

Health and fitness related resolutions, like detoxing or exercising more, are among the most common, but they’re also some of the easiest to give up. After all, who wants to go to the gym when Netflix is waiting for you?

Make your next binge-watch a show full of badass action that will make you want to evoke the signature moves of your favourite characters. Marvel’s Jessica Jones follows the titular character (Krysten Ritter), a woman with superhuman strength who runs a detective agency and uses her skills to take down the man who abused her. And before you let her superpowers discourage you, Jessica’s best friend, Trish (Rachael Taylor) is 100 per cent human and also has fighting skills that can rival Jessica’s strength.

If action isn’t really your thing, GLOW might be for you. Revolving around a group of women who learn to wrestle for a TV show, Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. In between some personal drama, the ladies put in hours of sweaty work to reach their goals, and they’ll encourage you to do the same.

If you’ve resolved to learn something new…

Whether you’re trying to learn a new skill, pick up a hobby, or are studying a new language, we all tend to hid roadblocks along the way. It happens to the best of us — really. The first two seasons of Netflix’s The Crown are essentially about Queen Elizabeth II learning how to actually be the head of the monarchy. Meanwhile, on the second season of The Good Place, a group of self-centred people are putting themselves through ethics lessons in an attempt to become better people. Trust us, if these people can do it, so can you.

If you’re going after a new job…

Seeking out a promotion or new job can be scary and anxiety-inducing, especially with the added pressure of putting it on your list of resolutions. Summon your confidence and courage with The Bold Type, which follows three drive and passionate BFFs who work at a women’s magazine. Inspired by the life of former Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Joanna Coles, the 10-episode first season of the show sees its main characters hustling and going after what they want.

Or if you’re looking to add a legal drama to your TV library, try The Good Fight. The show also focuses on three women, two self-assured professionals and a young lawyer just learning the ropes. Watching these skilled, intelligent, and elegant women work hard and adapt to new situations will definitely leave you jotting down a few life tips.

If your resolution is to make more time for your friends and family…

Sometimes, you’re just too tired or busy to go out with your friends or family. A lowkey night in front of the TV could be the perfect solution. Bring your family closer together with Netflix’s remake of One Day at a Time, a heartwarming and hilarious sitcom about a single mom (Justina Machado) raising her two kids and living with her mother (Rita Moreno).

And for a night in with your BFF, put on Grace and Frankie, starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as two women who move in together after their husbands leave them. You and your BFF will giggle the night away while thinking about what your friendship will look like in the future.

Or maybe you want to take care of yourself…

Never neglect a resolution to look after your personal wellbeing, regardless of whether you’re trying to manage your stress better, get organized, or just make more time for yourself. Find a show to treat yourself with! If sweet romances are your happy place, Jane the Virgin is the show you’re looking for. Gina Rodriguez stars as Jane, a young woman who accidentally gets artificially inseminated and faces many personal, romantic, and professional life challenges.

If you want a little less romance, but still want something sweet and funny, try Kevin (Probably) Saves the World. Starring Jason Ritter as the titular Kevin, the show is about a man who returns to his hometown after a suicide attempt and he ends up being tasked with saving the world, performing a series of random acts of kindness along the way that will be sure to leave you smiling.
