On May 6, Netflix will release Becoming, a feature-length documentary about Michelle Obama. (And yes, the film has the same name as her epic 2018 memoir.) Today, audiences can get their first look at the film with a new trailer.

Becoming is an intimate look at the former First Lady’s life and career in the White House, with a focus on her international book tour in 2019.

Director Nadia Hallgren shines a light on Obama’s working class upbringing in Chicago’s South Side and takes viewers along on her journey to Princeton, relationship with Barack Obama and her activism in and out of the White House. As Obama says in the trailer, “So little of who I am happened in those eight years. So much more of who I was happened before.”

“I treasure the memories and that sense of connection now more than ever, as we struggle together to weather this pandemic,” Obama said in a press release. “It’s hard these days to feel grounded or hopeful, but I hope that like me, you’ll find joy and a bit of respite in what Nadia has made.”
