Through time, the Oscars have given us some of the biggest pop culture moments in history.

The wrong ‘Best Film’ winner drama of 2017, for instance. Jennifer Lawrence tripping up on stage to collect her Best Actress gong, Michael Moore’s anti-President Bush speech in 2003 and plenty of memorable dresses.

The 2021 Oscars – which were postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic – saw the likes of Frances McDormand win Best Actress for Nomadland, Yuh-Jung Youn receive the Best Supporting Actress gong for Minari, Chloé Zhao win Best Director for Nomadland and Emerald Fennell for Best Original Screenplay for Promising Young Woman.

Ahead of thid year’s ceremony, we’ve rounded up all of the information you need to know:

When are the 2022 Oscars?

The 94th Academy Awards will take place in person on March 27, 2022.

The 2021 Oscars were pushed back from February 28 to April 25 due to the pandemic. The stars, from Margot Robbie to Zendaya, took to the red carpet in what was the most business-as-usual awards show we’d seen during awards season.

Until the early 2000s, the Oscars took place in March or April until the Academy moved it forward to a date in February. This year will be the first time the ceremony takes place in March.

In addition to postponing the 2020 event, the BBC reports that the ceremony’s organizers also extended the qualifying window for awards from December 31, 2020 to the end of February 2021.

“This is a much needed boost for those films who may have been stalled in post-production,” an Academy member told Variety.

All other major award shows postponed their ceremonies too; the BAFTAs were pushed back to April 11, the Golden Globes to February 28 weeks later than its usual end of January slot, while the SAG Awards were held on April 4.

Who has been nominated for an Oscar?

Actors Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan announced the nominations for this year’s Oscars on February 8, 2022 in the early hours of the morning, at an event held in Los Angeles.

This came after voting for nominations ended on February 1.

Kristen Stewart has received her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her portrayal of Princess Diana in Spencer. The actor will go up against Jessica Chastain for biographical drama The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Olivia Colman for psychological thriller The Lost Daughter, Penélope Cruz for tearjerking drama Parallel Mothers and Nicole Kidman for the historical film Being the Ricardos.

Will Smith is also nominated for Best Actor, thanks to his performance playing the father of tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams in King Richard, as is Benedict Cumberbatch for Western drama The Power of the Dog. Two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington could earn his third accolade for the thriller The Tragedy of Macbeth, while Andrew Garfield is also in the running to win the gong for the musical tick, tick… BOOM!

The Power of the Dog, which see Kirsten Dunst up for a supporting role accolade, has had much success in recent weeks, having won three awards at the Golden Globes and received a staggering eight nominations at the BAFTAs. The film is now up for 12 nominations at this year’s 94th annual Academy Awards.

Where will the Oscars be held?

The Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

On the Oscars night in 2021, the main event was in Los Angeles, however there were smaller events also held in London, while Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher were seen in Sydney, Australia.

“In this unique year that has asked so much of so many, the Academy is determined to present an Oscars like none other, while prioritizing the public health and safety of all those who will participate,” a spokesperson told THR.

“To create the in-person show our global audience wants to see, while adapting to the requirements of the pandemic, the ceremony will broadcast live from multiple locations, including the landmark Dolby Theatre.”

Awards ceremonies in 2020 and 2021 featured a blend of pre-taped and live moments in place of live audiences, which is what the Oscars may attempt. The 2020 Emmy’s socially-distanced show included footage of winners accepting the awards from their homes while host Jimmy Kimmel ran the proceedings from the Staples Center, audience-free, occasionally joined by the odd celebrity guest at a distance.

Who is presenting the 2022 Oscars?

This is anyone’s guess right now, but it’s likely the 2022 Oscars will go ahead without a host.

After years of controversial hosts and the job being jokingly referred to as one of the worst to land in Hollywood, the Oscars 2021 continued with its theme of being host-less.

Rather than having one presenter throughout the ceremony, there were a number of stars who presented individual awards and performances instead, with Regina King kicking things off by introducing the ceremony.

On April 12, 2021, the Academy confirmed some of the presenters that would make an appearance: Angela Bassett, Halle Berry, Bong Joon Ho, Don Cheadle, Bryan Cranston, Laura Dern, Harrison Ford, Regina King, Marlee Matlin, Rita Moreno, Joaquin Phoenix, Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon, Renée Zellweger and Zendaya.

Who will perform at the 2022 Oscars?

It wouldn’t be the Academy Awards without some memorable performances like John Legend and Common’s moving “Glory” number in 2015 or the star-studded Les Miserables performance in 2013 or 2019’s hugely talked about rendition of “Shallow” by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.

At present it’s unknown who will play at next year’s ceremony.

All of the Best Original Song nominees recorded their performances prior to the 2021 Oscars, including the likes of British singer Celeste, Grammy winner H.E.R, Swedish pop singer Molly Sandén, Laura Pausini and Diane Warren and One Night In Miami… (and Hamilton’s) Leslie Odom Jr.

Last year, Eminem also surprised attendees with his rendition of “Lose Yourself,” resulting in some rather amusing reactions among the audience.

How can I watch the Oscars?

In Canada, the Oscars can be watched on ABC or streamed on CTV.ca at 8 p.m. EST.
