It’s a moment in Oscars history that’s so crazy we’ve sort of even forgotten that it ACTUALLY happened: The wrong best picture was announced, and nobody corrected the mistake until the half-way through the not-real-winners’ acceptance speeches.

One of the things that many people noticed amid all the confusion was Ryan Gosling, sort of standing to the side and chuckling to himself as everyone found out that Mononlight, not his movie Lalaland had really scored best picture. It’s a reaction that struck some as a little odd at the time…and Ryan totally gets that.

“What really was happening as I was watching, it was surreal anyway, I was watching people start to have this panicked reaction in the crowd and guys were coming on with headsets and I felt like someone had been hurt,” explained Gosling at the Adobe Summit, a tech event he was at yesterday. “I had this worst-case scenario playing out in my head, and when I found out Moonlight had won, I was so relieved that I started laughing.”

Hey girl…turns out Ryan gets the nervous giggles too.
