It’s impossible to keep up with the hours and hours worth of shows and movies that premiere every week. Here, we highlight the new titles arriving on Netflix Canada this January to help you decide what to watch.

The Hook Up Plan (Season 3)

If you haven’t watched French romcom series The Hook Up Plan (a.k.a. Plan Coeur) before, I’m going to need you to finish reading this, then immediately click over to Netflix and hit play. The charming and winning show follows Elsa, a perpetually single woman who’s unlucky in love. Wanting to help her out – in a very misguided way – her friends hire a male escort to boost her confidence, but, of course, things spin out of their control. The third season finds the core friend group rocked by a secret romance and the need to make big decisions.

Available: January 1.

Pacific Rim

If you spent any time on Tumblr in 2013 – or are just a fan of Oscar-winner Guillermo del Toro – you don’t need me to tell you about the virtues of Pacific Rim. But if you didn’t, now’s your time to give it a much-deserved second look. The sci-fi/action flick stars Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi and is set during a feature in which humanity is at war with the Kaiju, a species of gigantic, otherworldly sea monsters. To ward them off, people use huge Transformer-like machines that are controlled when two “pilots” form a mental link. If it sounds confusing, well…maybe it kind of is – but it’s also unexpectedly tender and big-hearted.

Archive 81

Calling all horror fans: there’s a new show for you. Based on a supernatural horror podcast, the eerie Archive 81 follows an archivist who takes a job restoring the damaged videotapes of a documentarian’s investigation into a cult from the ‘90s and soon gets sucked into the dangerous mystery. The series is produced by genre maven James Wan, so you can trust that you’re in good hands.

Available: January 14.

Prisoners

Before he was at the helm of one of the biggest movies of 2021, Dune director (and fellow Canadian) Denis Villeneuve (also known for big sci-fi films like Arrival and Blade Runner 2049) was making intense thrillers like Prisoners. The movie tells the story of the abduction of two girls in Pennsylvania and the frantic search for them by both the police and one of the fathers, and features a star-studded cast that includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Hugh Jackman, Maria Bello and Paul Dano. The movie is quite dark and upsetting, so prepare yourself for that before watching.

Available: January 16.

After We Fell

Do I think the “After” movies are good? Absolutely not. But do I love telling people that the romantic dramas – which follows the “love” story between a naive first-year college student and the resident mysterious bad boy on campus – are adapted from a series of books that originally started as Harry Styles fanfiction and seeing how they react? I sure do, so enjoy that information. After We Fell is the third installment in the franchise, which stars Josephine Langford (sister to 13 Reasons Why star Katherine) and Hero Fiennes Tiffin (nephew to actors Ralph and Joseph Fiennes) as the two tortured lovers.

Available: January 17.

The Royal Treatment

I’m an easy target: Stick the word “royal” in the title of a romcom and I will watch it. Enter The Royal Treatment, which stars Canadian star Mena Massoud (a.k.a. Aladdin himself) as the charming Prince Thomas, who’s engaged to be married to a woman he loves. When NYC stylist Izzy (Laura Marano) is hired to work the wedding, sparks inevitably fly between the pair. Tune in to find out if they each get their own happy ending – and if it ever makes sense that a random New Yorker is hired for what seems to be an important international event.

Available: January 20.

Ozark (Season 4, Part 1)

Ozark isn’t really for everyone, but if dark and relentless crime dramas are your thing, you probably love it – and even if you don’t, Julia Garner’s scene-stealing, star-making performance as Ruth is worth watching the series for alone. Netflix is prolonging the hit’s fourth and final season by splitting it in half. This batch of episodes finds the Byrde family (led by Jason Bateman and Laura Linney) within reach of escaping the cartel, but can they actually pull it off?

Available: January 21.

Chosen

Danish post-apocalyptic drama The Rain grew quite a following during its three season run. Now, the creators are back with Chosen, a new coming-of-age sci-fi series. This one follows a teen girl whose world gets turned upside down when she uncovers some disturbing secrets about her quiet hometown – leading to discoveries about herself.

Available: January 27.

Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness

Jonathan Van Ness’ unabashed radiance, positivity and exuberance is one of the best things to come out of the most recent iteration of Queer Eye. Now, the star is bringing that same energy to his own solo show. Inspired by his podcast of the same name, Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness finds the personality doing a deep dive into a question that has piqued his curiosity. Aided by expert guests, JVN explores topics like figure skating, snacking and gender identity.

The Woman in the House Across the Street From the Girl in the Window

Satire can be hard to get right – especially when it’s a send up of a genre like domestic mystery thrillers that is also notoriously hard to get right (see: The Woman in the Window, for example). But that’s not going to stop Kristen Bell from trying in The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window. Bell stars as Anna, a grieving artist whose life is upended when she witnesses a murder – but did she really?
