Netflix (Luckiest Girl Alive)
It’s impossible to keep up with the hours and hours worth of shows and movies that premiere every week. Here, we highlight the new titles arriving on Netflix Canada this October to help you decide what to watch.
Bling Empire (Season 3)
What can we expect from the third season of flashy reality TV series Bling Empire? In a word: More—more grandeur, more partying, more drama, more…everything. Also, the trailer reveals that Selling Sunset star Chrishell Stause will be making an appearance, which I’m sure will feel very organic and make a ton of sense to the events of the season.
Available: October 5
Nailed It! (Season 7)
For its seventh (!) outing, the always delightful baking competition series Nailed It! is fully embracing spooky season with a batch of Halloween-themed episodes. That means the resulting desserts have even more potential to be scary—either because the contestants intended them to be that way or, you know, they didn’t. Host Nicole Byer is back, and stars from other Netflix series, including Cobra Kai and The Umbrella Academy, will be appearing as well. Trick or treat!
Available: October 5
Derry Girls (Season 3)
Derry Girls is one of the funniest—and, honestly, probably just one of the outright best—shows available in the Netflix library, which is why I’m thrilled its third season is finally being made available here. It’s a bittersweet moment, however, as this is also the last season of the critically acclaimed series, which follows a group of hilarious and outrageous teens (including Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan) living in Northern Ireland in the ‘90s, towards the end of the tumultuous political-nationalist conflict known as the Troubles. I suspect I will be crying both from laughter and sadness.
Available: October 7
Luckiest Girl Alive
Lovers of true-crime and crime-thrillers, rejoice: This one is perfect for you. Adapted from Jessica Knoll’s bestselling novel of the same name, twisty flick Luckiest Girl Alive stars Mila Kunis as Ani, a New Yorker who seemingly has it all. She has a covetable job, a closet full of chic clothes and is about to have a dreamy wedding in Nantucket. But when a director asks her to participate in a true-crime documentary about a shocking incident that occured when she attended high school, her dark past comes back to haunt her—and, quite possibly, destroy the Instagrammable life she’s worked so hard to craft.
Available: October 7
The Midnight Club
I can only assume filmmaker Mike Flanagan—The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass and almost every other hugely popular show or movie you think of from the last decade—is responsible for many, many nightmares because I am too scared to watch anything longer than a trailer that has his name attached to it. His latest, The Midnight Club, is definitely following in that tradition, which I’m sure is welcome news for fans. The spooky series follows a group of terminally ill teens who live together at a hospice—where they make a pact dictating that the first one of them to die must send the others a sign from beyond the grave.
Available: October 7
The Mole
Back in the early 2000s, Anderson Cooper hosted a popular reality competition series called The Mole. That show is now back—with MSNBC anchor Alex Wagner taking on hosting duties—for a modern-day version. The popcorn-worthy premise is as follows: 12 contestants come together for a series of challenges, adding money to a pot that only one person will take home at the end. To make things even harder, producers have added a “Mole” to the group—a.k.a. a person whose sole responsibility is to sabotage the group’s efforts to earn more money. To come out on top, someone must expose the true identity of the Mole. Happy sleuthing.
Available: October 7
Love Is Blind (Season 3)
We’ve barely moved on from Love Is Blind’s second season (seriously, the reunion special just aired last month), but the daring reality series is already back for another round. Will this go at the blind-dating-to-marriage pipeline result in more successful relationships? I doubt it, but you’ll have to watch to find out for sure.
Available: October 19
The School for Good and Evil
Writer-director Paul Feig is the brains behind some of my very favourite things—cult coming-of-age series Freaks and Geeks, blockbuster comedy Bridesmaids and the underrated 2015 action-comedy Spy, to name a few—which means I will watch anything he does. The fact that his latest film, The School for Good and Evil, is an enchanting fairytale about two BFFs whose bond is tested when they start attending a magical school for heroes and villains that stars Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington and Michelle Yeoh doesn’t hurt either.
Available: October 19
From Scratch
From Scratch seems like a miniseries designed to make viewers ugly cry. Inspired by Tembi Locke’s bestselling memoir of the same name, the romantic drama follows aspiring American artist Amy (Zoe Saldana) as she meets the love of her life in Italy, a chef named Lino (Eugenio Mastrandrea). The show tracks the couple through their life-defining relationship as they fall in love, build a life together, move to the U.S., start a family and experience tragic loss.
Available: October 21
The Good Nurse
Work BFFs are crucial for getting through the long days—which is why caring ICU nurse Amy (Jessica Chastain) is relieved when a new nurse, Charlie (Eddie Redmayne), joins her unit and they quickly form a strong bond. But that’s not the story The Good Nurse is focused on telling. Soon a string of odd deaths occur among their patients—and all signs point to Charlie being responsible, leading Amy to risk her and her family’s safety to figure out what has really been going on.
