“Ma’am, they’re waiting for you,” a servant tells Kristen Stewart’s Princess Diana in the new trailer for Spencer. Have truer words ever been spoken?

Ever since the jaw-dropping reveal of Bella Swan in Lady Di’s iconic blonde coif first spilled onto the internet, the anticipation for the upcoming film has been nothing short of agonizing. Directed by Pablo Larraín—who helmed the similarly tragic biopic Jackie, following Jackie Kennedy’s spiral in the wake of her husband’s shooting—Spencer focuses on a handful of hours in the princess’s life, which are often considered some of the young royal’s most essential moments. Arguments abound that Diana’s time at the Sandringham Estate, the royal family’s holiday home, circa Christmas 1990, changed her life as wife and would-be queen—and, ultimately, sealed her untimely fate.

The official logline for Spencer reads: “The marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles has long since grown cold. Though rumours of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. But this year, things will be profoundly different. SPENCER is an imagining of what might have happened during those few fateful days.”

In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Stewart clarified that the film takes place over three days. “It’s this really poetic, internal imagining of what that might have felt like, rather than giving new information,” she said.

There’s something about Princess Diana that has galvanized audience devotion for decades after her death, and with Oscar buzz mounting around Spencer, the wait for a seat in the theatre simply can’t end soon enough.
