Canadian Marvel fans are in for a treat. As reported by Deadline, the upcoming Ms. Marvel series, set to air on Disney+, will star 18-year-old Markham-native Iman Vellani. Marvel has yet to confirm the news.

“Speechless and excited! Wish me luck,” Vellani captioned a post of the news on Instagram, which has since been deleted.

Ms. Marvel will feature Vellani as a Pakistani-American teen named Kamala Khan, based in New Jersey. Vellani is taking on a monumental part as the first Muslim on-screen hero in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) history.

This is Vellani’s first major role, although her connections to the film industry stem back to her time in 2019 as a member on the TIFF Next Wave committee in Toronto.

Fellow actor Kumail Nanjiani shared his excitement of the news on Twitter: “I just saw they cast Ms. Marvel and legit got teary eyed,” he wrote. “Congratulations Iman Vellani! Your work is going to mean so much to so many people, myself included. I can’t wait.”
