Glass
Starring: Bruce Willis, Sarah Paulson, James McAvoy, Samuel L. Jackson
Release Date: January 18
Writer-director M. Night Shyamalan wants you to know Glass, the 18-years-in-the-making final film in his Unbreakable trilogy, is different from your standard Marvel and DC superhero fare. Sure, his thrillers centre on super-powered people, but that’s where the similarities end. Prepare for another mind trip when Bruce Willis’s “unbreakable man,” Samuel L. Jackson’s evil mastermind and James McAvoy’s super villain with 23 personalities (as seen in 2016’s Split) cross paths.
Miss Bala
Starring: Gina Rodriguez, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Anthony Mackie
Release Date: February 1
Director Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) helms an action-thriller with a badass female protagonist. Gloria (Gina Rodriguez) gets kidnapped and is forced to smuggle money for a drug cartel while searching for her missing BFF.
Isn’t It Romantic
Starring: Rebel Wilson, Priyanka Chopra, Liam Hemsworth, Adam Devine
Release Date: February 14
Natalie (Rebel Wilson) hates rom-coms, and so is dismayed to find herself trapped in a PG-13 one after a head injury. Her only way to escape her new clichéd world? True love, of course.
The Aftermath
Starring: Keira Knightley, Alexander Skarsgård, Jason Clarke
Release Date: April 26, 219
Queen of the period film Keira Knightley is back doing what she does best. Knightley stars in the post-WWII movie as Rachel Morgan, a woman who reunites with her husband Lewis (First Man’s Jason Clarke), a British colonel helping rebuild Hamburg. Lewis invites the previous owners of their new home, a German widower (Skarsgård) and his daughter, to stay with them—without asking Rachel. But when Lewis leaves for a mission, Rachel and her houseguest grow closer and closer…This is the first time Knightley and Skarsgård are sharing the screen together, and we expect intense chemistry.
Aladdin
Starring: Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, Will Smith, Billy Magnussen
Release Date: May 24
Twenty-seven years after the release of the original animated movie, Disney’s Aladdin is back in a live-action retelling directed by Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes, The Man From U.N.C.L.E). Canadian Mena Massoud takes on the role of the charming protagonist, while Will Smith is the iconic Genie. If only we could wish that this movie was out right now.
The Lion King
Starring: Donald Glover, Beyoncé, James Earl Jones, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Billy Eichner, Seth Rogen, John Oliver
Release Date: July 19
We’ll definitely be watching Disney’s retelling of The Lion King, directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man, The Jungle Book). The star-studded cast is nothing short of attention grabbing; Donald Glover voices Simba, Beyoncé (!!) is Nala, Seth Rogen is Simba’s warthog friend Pumbaa, Oscar-nominee Chiwetel Ejiofar is the power-hungry Scar and OG Mufasa James Earl Jones is back voicing his original character. It’ll be the ultimate nostalgia trip.
Downton Abbey
Starring: Michelle Dockery, Maggie Smith, Laura Carmichael
Release Date: September 20
Break out your finest tea sets, because Downton Abbey is back. Details about the show’s jump to the big screen are scarce (we have some guesses though), but we do know that creator Julian Fellowes wrote the screenplay and that the original cast—even our fave dowager countess Violet Crawley (Maggie Smith) are returning. Bring on the drama!
