The nominations for the 2020 Oscars are here and in not-at-all surprising/completely infuriating news, not one woman was nominated in the Best Director category…again. The news follows a familiar pattern with women being shutout of the category at all of this year’s major awards shows, including the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards and The BAFTAs. (Watch the trailers and get a full breakdown of every nominated film here.)

Instead, the nominees in the category are Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, Bong Joon Ho for Parasite, Todd Phillips for Joker and Sam Mendes for 1917. After announcing the category, presenter Issa Rae simply said, “Congratulations to those men.”

Throughout history, only five women have been nominated in the Best Director category, the last time being in 2017, when Greta Gerwig was nominated for Lady Bird.

Within the four acting categories (Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress), Harriet’s Cynthia Erivo was the only Black actor/actress nominated.

Phillips’ Joker leads this year’s Oscar nominations, earning 11 total, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Adapted Screenplay. The Irishman, 1917 and Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood followed closely behind with 10 nods each. And although Gerwig didn’t receive any love in the directing category, her iteration of Little Women received six noms (including Best Picture, Best Actress for Saoirse Ronan and Best Supporting Actress for Florence Pugh), as did Jojo Rabbit, Marriage Story and Parasite.

Other notable nominees include Judy‘s Renée Zellweger for Best Actress, Brad Pitt for Supporting Actor in Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, Charlize Theron for Best Actress in Bombshell, Laura Dern for Supporting Actress in Marriage Story and two nominees for Scarlett Johansson, Best Actress for Marriage Story and Supporting Actress for Jojo Rabbit.

And if you’ve been waiting to read Jennifer Lopez’s name in the Supporting Actress category for Hustlers you’re going to have to keep waiting, because JLo was snubbed and we are not ready to talk about it yet.

The 2020 Academy Awards will be held on February 9 and will go hostless for the second year in a row.
