Why Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro are wearing heels at Cannes
There are dress codes, and then there are ridiculous, gender-biased holdovers-from-the-Dark-Ages-of-Misogony so dumb you assume they must be hoaxes. The
Cannes "women must wear heels on the red carpet" policy falls firmly into the latter category.
You read that right: At the premiere of film festival premiere of Carol last night, several women were refused entry to the red carpet on the basis that they were wearing flats, and denied access by officials until they changed into something a little more uncomfortable aka heels. The irony in all this of course is that this was the opening night of
a film all about challenging conventional ideas of love and womanhood. The fest hasn’t officially commented on this, but it’s caused quite the uproar: Apparenly, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro will be donning stilettos to walk their red carpet tonight as a gesture of solidarity. One small step…but Cannes, you’ve got a long way to go.
