Bourbon has gotten a reputation as the sort of drink that you sip fireside in your mansion on a chilly winter night. But one sip of this basil-infused take on the Brown Derby from Marlene Thorne of Toronto’s Famous Last Words bar and we promise you’ll change your tune. Full recipe below.

 

 

 

 

Step 1: Pour 1 ½ oz. of Bulleit bourbon into a shaker

Step 2: Add 1 oz. of freshly squeezed ruby red grapefruit juice.

Step 3: Add ½ oz. of simple syrup. (To make simple syrup, combine equal parts boiling water and sugar and let cool.)

Step 4: Throw in a handful of fresh basil leaves.

Step 5: Fill the shaker with ice.

Step 6: Shake the cocktail for 30 seconds.

Step 7: Strain the cocktail into a coupe glass.

Step 8: Garnish with fresh basil.
