When it comes to getting what we want in life, it can sometimes feel like it’s out of our control. Whether it’s not getting that job you really wanted or considering yourself unlucky in love, how much of our lives are really in our hands? Enter: manifestation.

The age old school of though is enjoying somewhat of a second life on TikTok — and for good reason, according to manifestation and spiritual coach, Allira Potter.

“Manifesting has become so popular because people have had time to really look into it more,” she told ELLE Australia. “Given the last few years with lockdowns and the rise of WitchTok (on TikTok) people are like ,’Hey I want to learn more about this’. Now, we have seen a huge rise in people wanting to learn more about spirituality, intuition and manifesting.”

But what actually is manifestation, and how can you harness its powers to your advantage? While the look and feel may have changed a little over the years, there a few basic principles that have stood the test of time. Below, everything you need to know about manifestation.

What Is Manifestation?

Put simply, manifestation is the process of turning your dreams into reality through intention-setting and affirmative action. You can’t have one without the other, with both going hand-in-hand to help you achieve your goals.

As for who should be doing it? Anyone with a dream, according to Allira! If you can list between one and three things you’d like to achieve or improve in your life, chances are, you’re a pretty good candidate to start manifesting.

“I think anyone who is in a position to be able to manifest should do it, but take it seriously!” she explains. “People get carried away with manifesting, but it needs to come from a place of intention and an understanding your worth to be able to bring in the things we desire.”

Importantly, manifestation isn’t limited to those who understand it inside and out. Whether you’re doing it for the first time or have practiced many times before, you can always lean on it to leverage your desired goals when you feel you need it most. Allira’s book, Wild & Witchy is filled with modern manifestation techniques and step-by-step guides, to break down the process for anyone who wants to bring a little extra magic to their lives through manifestation.

How Does Manifestation Work?

Some believe that manifestation hinges on the Law Of Attraction. While it sounds full-on, it basically just means that like attracts like — so whatever you put out into the universe is what you will receive in return. Allira doesn’t believe that there are rigid laws in place, but she says that it does come down to a few key things.

“Understand why you are manifesting — really think about why you want to bring in a certain thing. Keep an open and positive mindset, and understand that whatever you decide to be open to receiving, that with this comes change,” she explained.

Along with setting your intention and focusing on it, you also need to take action, making steps toward reaching that intention every single day. The change isn’t going to happen overnight, and it isn’t going to come without any effort, so you need to be willing to put in the work.

The most important thing to remember, is that a lot of your life is controlled by your thoughts. The way you choose to see situations, the actions you decide to take and the goals you set yourself, all start with your thoughts. Manifestation is about taking your thoughts and everything you want to feel and experience, and making it a reality.

How Do I Start Manifesting?

Manifestation looks a little different for everyone, so it’s important to find a practice that works for you. That being said, there are a few universal steps to guide you on your manifestation journey.

  1. Start by getting clear about what you want. Are you manifesting a new job or a healthy relationship? The more specific, the better.
  2. Once you’ve set your intention, it’s time to ask the universe for what you want. This is where you can personalise your practice, by trying out meditation, vision boards, visualisation, speaking your intentions daily — whatever works best for you. Allira’s go-to method is the good old-fashioned pen and paper route, but says that adding wish candles and crystals can “help amplify a manifestation.” Whichever method you decide to do, make sure to get specific and be clear and direct each time.
  3. As we now know, nailing down exactly what you want is only half the battle. The other half is taking the necessary action to achieve it. You won’t see any results unless you take the steps to get there. If you’re trying to land a new job, you’ll need to go out and network, update your resume and practice for a job interview. Some also believe that it’s helpful to visualise the way you’ll feel once your goal is achieved, and take the time to sit in the feeling, which will spur you on even more.
  4. Lastly, remember to be grateful for the things that you do achieve. A gratitude journal and daily affirmations are an amazing way of reminding ourselves of all the little things that are still fulfilling. Maybe you don’t land your dream job, but you do find a brilliant mentor who can help you prepare for another one — remember these things, and show gratitude for them.
