What You Need To Know About This Year's SAG Awards
by : Meera Estrada- Jan 19th, 2018
Here’s our 2 minute primer on what to expect—and what you need to know—at the 24th annual Screen Actors’ Guild Awards.
1) They’re THIS Sunday, January 21st.
2) They’ll have a host for the first time ever
Last month the Guild announced that Kristen Bell will serve as the ceremony’s first ever host – marking a historic moment for the SAGs as well as Kristen. “I thought that’s so cool and, you know, I’m a woman. My genitalia is irrelevant. It’s not the first female host. It’s the first host. I thought that was kinda cool,” Kristen said in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel earlier this week on why she accepted the honour.
3) A continuation of the Globes red carpet vibe
While we’re not expecting the same sea of black on this carpet, expect the mood to be more muted than past years, given the current conversation in Hollywood, and carpet coverage to include conversations around #TimesUp and #AskHerMore.
4) There will exclusively be female presenters
Another first for the show, this year women will get a lot more stage time. Presenters include Mandy Moore, Olivia Munn, Emma Stone, Lupitya Nyong’o, Halle Berry, Gina Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Dakota Fanning, Mary J. Blige among others. Men won’t be entirely absent as presenters. They will be co-presenters for Outstanding Ensemble Casts.
5) There could be potential for some high profile No-Shows
Although both James Franco and and Aziz Ansari are nominated for awards, it will be interesting to see if they show up, given the recent sexual assault allegations both have faced. Franco is nominated for his performance in The Disaster Artist and Aziz Ansari for Master of None. Both were winners in their categories at the Golden Globes this year.
6) There will be Morgan Freeman
Freeman will be presented with SAG’s Life Achievement Award – the highest honour granted by the Guild. Oprah set the bar way high at the Globes so, good luck with that Morgan.
7) These movies and TV shows are likely to pick up some hardware
On the film side Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri has been a lead contender and the Big Little Lies, GLOW, and Stranger Things trio are pretty sure to take home some statuettes for TV.
