The Genie Awards went down on Thursday and while the Canadian film and television awards might not be the highlight of your entertainment calendar, they brought a few happy surprises this year. Host George Stroumboulopoulos looked polished (yay, no black jeans and studded cuff tonight!) and super trim (rumour has it that Strombo has gotten on the
vegan bandwagon). Good thing too because co-host, the hilarious Andrea Martin, had to bail the day before the show when one of her US TV contracts conflicted. Ouch. But let’s get to the important parts:
Who looked best? The winner in my books was Gabrielle Miller (way too hot to have ever been on
Corner Gas, in my opinion). She looked stunning in a floor skimming emerald
Lucian Matis dress. The basket-weave waist and back detailing were flawless (and insanely flattering).
Who looked worst—scratch that—who also looked awesome? The Sheepdogs, Saskatchewan’s very own
’70s-chic rockers (you know the unsigned band that scored the cover of
Rolling Stone magazine last year—no big deal), worked their signature washed out denim, flared cords and hobo beards. The look is objectively awful, and yet, I’m obsessed with the style of these über-talented musicians. Never shave, boys! If I’m being honest though? The highlight of my night was when, while walking into the hall for the show, my guest and I spied a shaggy unkempt dude from behind. “Look, it’s The Sheepdogs!” she cracked. Yeah, it actually was. Joke’s on us I guess.
Who sounded best? For those of you who aren’t familiar with Rossif Sutherland (yes, there are more of them!), he’s
Donald’s son and
Kiefer’s half brother. This year, he was “the voice of the Genie Awards” meaning he does all those nice little voiceovers. The result? My ears fell in love on Thursday night. The casual, deep drawl of this laidback Vancouver–born actor is sonic heaven (and he’s cute in that loping tousled stoner kind of a way). Rossif, call me anytime.
