Warm weather switcheroos – The products you need right now
As pre-summer excitement rises (along with the temperature, hurrah!), I think it’s time for a little "what to switch up in your makeup bag" information. I know, I know, magazine editors are always telling you to give your beauty routine an overhaul every season and it can seem a little excessive — not to mention expensive. Plus, certain products are so beloved they fall into the "monogamous makeup" category. (Looking at you, Lancôme Definicils mascara). However as the weather gets warmer, I’ve made product tweaks in order to keep my makeup, skin and hair in the boss-like condition I require. Here’s what I’ve got in frequent rotation right now.
(clockwise from bottom)
NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer ($49, narscosmetics.ca). Tell your foundation to hit the road for summer. This is a lightweight, tinted moisturizer with SPF 30, the texture is beautifully smooth and the range of colours is realistic for the multi-ethnic world we live in. It also contains mineral rich sea water that helps brighten the complexion over time. I can
not stop yapping about this product and have already turned several ELLE staffers into converts.
Dermalogica AGEsmart Antioxidant Hydramist ($49). I got clued up to this facial mist after a great treatment at Dermalogica with a fab Brit named Amanda. (She unblocked a pore on my face that was so big I mistakenly thought it was a mole.
No, I’m not over it. I don’t even think therapy can help.) Pore-master Amanda recommended I spritz this on post cleansing/prior to moisturizing, and also to spray it on liberally throughout the day to keep skin hydrated. The face spritz phenomenon amongst beauty editors is big – all the eds I know use them. (ELLE Canada’s Associate Editor, Ally Dean has a collection of five on her desk that’s in constant use.)
Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color ($27, murale.ca). It’s a felt tip pen for your brows and it’s fantastic. Sure, at first it seems like it would be the fast track to Snooki-style painted on brows, but instead it gives a completely natural, feathered and long-lasting fill for those of us who need a little assistance. I love this little guy. Remember – always chose a lighter shade than you’d initially go for brow colour. It looks much more natural and flattering.
Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray ($44, Donato.ca). This texturizing spray smells so darn good it can replace your perfume. It pumps up flat hair, but not in a overly powdery, colour-flattening, dry shampoo way. The bottle is even prettier than the smell. It’s great for the "just got out of a convertible" big hair look— but without the twigs and birds.
Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Stay-Matte Hydrator ($43, clinique.com). By 11am my face looks like I’ve spent the morning frying bacon and leaning over the pan to inhale the delicious, sweet, sweet smell. (Mmm, bacon.) As wonderful as that would be, it’s not very "fashion". Thus, I need a mattifying product. This one is great because it doesn’t make your skin tight or weird (there’s still life left in your face after you apply it), and it actually works. I can forgo powder all day. That’s exciting for frying pan faces like me.
Skinceuticals C E Ferulic ($152, skinceuticals.com). I have been a long time user of this serum because I never trust I’ve got enough SPF on my face. I always pre-layer sunscreen with this Vitamin C and E based product, which I truly believe has the science behind it to back up it’s skin protecting claims. It’s full of antioxidant magic that acts like a burly doorman to the free radicals trying to enter the crows feet club. I’ve been using it for several years and call it (without sarcasm) liquid gold.
