Hundreds of people from the fashion industry are just now recovering from a whirlwind week of shows and parties for LG Fashion Week—present company included. We came, we saw and we swooned—here are a few of our favourite looks in hair and makeup.
The best hair: Pink Tartan
With a collection much inspired by the military, Kimberley Newport-Mimran asked L’Oréal Paris’s Eric Del Monaco for something strong and slick for the hair, but with some softness, too.
To create this
topknot, Eric pulled hair into a ponytail right on top of the head and sprayed with water (“Use gel if doing this at home,” he recommends—he only used water on the models as many were walking in another runway show later that night.) Then he evenly split the ponytail into two sections and twisted one section into a horseshoe shape standing upright and bobby-pinned it into place. Then, twisting the second section, he wrapped it around the base of the first section and secured it into place with a bobby pin. To finish, he gave the look a light spritz of L’Oréal Paris Elnet Hairspray.
The best eyes: Denis Gagnon
Denis Gagnon’s sense of drama for fall 2011 (we adored the coats and eye popping hits of neon colour), L’Oréal Paris’s Eddie Malter opted his own brightly hued look that focused on the eyes.
To create this brightly washed look, Eddie started with clean skin to really showcase the bold eye. He then took HiP high intensity pigments Bright Shadow Duos in Flare and used the orange shade around the entire eye (from lash line up into the crease). He then used the pink shade from HiP high intensity pigments Bright Shadow Duos in Adventurous smudged into the orange shadow along the lash line, into the contour and up and out to create a “V” shape on the outer corner of the eye. “No mascara. No liner. It’s just very soft,” he explained. Groom the brows with a bit of hairspray, add a very soft sculpting of pink blush, and dab a tiny bit of nude lipstick on your pout and you’re done!

The best complexion: Lucian Matis
Over at the Design Exchange, with Lucian Matis’s sumptuous collection of elaborate knits and beading,
Smashbox Cosmetics pro lead artist Lori Taylor opted for makeup, including gorgeous natural looking skin, that let the clothes take the spotlight. “I’m a bit of an anti-makeup makeup artist,” says Lori. “I want the models to feel good, that’s when they look fantastic.” To give the skin a natural-looking matteness, “it’s all about highlighting and contouring,” says Lori, using the new Smashbox Step-By-Step Contour Kit to achieve the look. Her tips on contouring: “Imagine a line from your earlobe to your nostril, and leave a space two fingers wide next to your nose—your blush and contour whos be above this imaginary line,” she says. The best lips: Line Knitwear
We’re already looking forward to wrapping ourselves up in the cozy wools and furs at
Line Knitwear. And the only thing that drew our eyes away from the clothes? The deep, dark and dramatic lipstick. “The bordeaux lip is very big for fall,” says Eddie Malter of L’Oréal Paris. And with dark lipstick, he says, you have to be very careful with contouring it because it has to look just perfect.
For the lips here, he used two lip pencils,
L’Oréal Paris Crayon Petite Automatic Lip Liner in Burgundys and Basic Brown. From there, he layered two shades from L’Oréal Paris Infallible Le Rouge to make the lips super dark: Bold Bordeaux and Java Jolt.
The best nails: Lucian Matis
Leeanne Colley and her Tips Nail Bar team were busy over LG Fashion Week with four shows on their schedule. Our favourite manicures were the over-the-top nails at Lucian Matis, where the models sported fringe, beads and chains from their nails.
“His collections was mostly gold and black, and I felt it had a gorgeous wearable look that was a tad eccentric—and it really excited me, it meant I could go wild with the nails,” says Leeanne. She used Orly’s Solid Gold as the base colour and secured crystals to the tips using gel for one look. For another, she used CND’s Hyde in the Dark, a deep charcoal greay, and then secured long tassels to the nails using gel. For the third nail look at Lucian Matis, she used metal beads and chains that the designer used in a metal jacket design and incorporated these materials to the Hyde in the Dark base colour. “The nails were an extension of the clothes—we brought his collection to the fingertips,” says Leeanne.
