Howard Barr, hair stylist and Canada’s creative consultant for John Frieda, dishes on the hottest runway-inspired hair trends for spring ’07 with tips on how real gals can re-create the looks at home, sans catwalk.

The trend: ’80 Retro

Rocked the runways at: DSqaured, Vivienne Westwood

Love it ‘cuz: “It’s refreshing and exciting to see a move towards bigger hair,” Barr says.

Get it at home:

1)Apply a hair serum to towel-dried hair to protect against heat styling
2)Work in a volumizing mousse for body and fullness
3)Blow-dry hair
4)Use a jumbo curling iron to create a “bump” at the root area. Direct the front of the curling iron to the side you want to have a part on and upwards at the crown.
5)Flip head upside down and backcomb hair at nape and halfway up back of the head
6)Finish with firm-hold hairspray

Expert advice: Backcombing is crucial to getting the lift for this look. “Learn how to do it properly from your hairdresser or the internet, otherwise it can look like a rat’s nest,” says Barr.

Star products: For lift use John Frieda Sheer Blonde Blonde Ambition Volumizing Mousse or John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Full Shine Volumizing Mousse, $10/213g each, available at Shoppers Drug Mart, www.johnfrieda.com, 1-800-521-3189. For long-lasting hold try Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm-hold hairspray $10/350 ml.

The trend: The new ponytail

Rocked the runways at: Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel, Missoni

Love it ‘cuz: An upgrade from your basic pony, “this style starts with adding volume to the hair so it’s a bigger look overall,” says Barr.

Get it at home:
1)Apply a serum to clean, towel-dried hair
2)Blow-dry using a two-inch round brush
3)Prep hair with mousse and set it in hot rollers for 10 minutes
4)Remove rollers and brush out. Gently tease at the roots, using a little hairspray for hold
5)Pull hair back and secure with elastic. You can wear it either high at the crown, low or off to the side.
6)Smooth a finishing crème over locks

Expert advice: Barr likes to dress up this style by wrapping a bit of hair around the elastic band to cover it. Use a small section from underneath the ponytail, securing it with a bobby pin.
Star product: Keeps tendrils and flyaways under control with John Frieda Frizz-Ease Secret Weapon Flawless Finishing crème, available at Shoppers Drug Mart, www.johnfrieda.com, 1-800-521-3189, $10/115 ml.

The trend: Ballerina Knots

Rocked the runways at: Michael Kors, Tuleh

Love it ‘cuz: Barr loves the texture of this look, “it’s very romantic and perfect for a holiday.”

Get it at home:
1)Apply a serum to towel-dried hair
2)Blow-dry using a paddle brush
3)Leave locks smooth, or, for a heavily textured ‘do, use a crimper. Wield it from the back of your head forward in small sections. Be careful not to go over one piece numerous times, this will cause too much damage. You can also get a similar look with braids. Before bed, put them in damp hair, in different sizes, all over your head. You’ll wake up to messily chic tresses, simply undo and style
4)Pull hair back and twist into a knot. Secure with bobby pins leaving ends randomly sticking out.

Expert advice: “It’s all about looking undone. Bringing pieces of hair out of the bun really makes it special,” Barr says.

Star product: Serum is the best way to get intense shine and protect hair from heat, try John Frieda Frizz-Ease Hair Serum, available at Shoppers Drug Mart, www.johnfrieda.com, 1-800-521-3189, $10/24 ml.

Rocked the runway at: Marc Jacobs and Versace with eye-catching jewels, Valentino with red multi-headbands and Chanel with big, black bows

Love it ‘cuz: “Accessories are an easy way to dress up any style,” Barr says “and a nice change for women of all ages.”

Get it at home:
1)Slip on a colourful headband to add to a bun
2)Clip in a jeweled barrette to a ‘do with volume
3)Tie a pretty piece of ribbon onto the base of a ponytail

Expert advice: “Simpler is better. Use accessories as a compliment to your look,” recommends Barr.

Star product: Whatever your accessory du jour is! From faux-diamond barrettes to shiny satin ribbons, there are many options to play with.
