Now more than ever, we’re mindful of the ecological impacts that our everyday products have. From packaging to formulas to the ultra-important production process, there’s a lot to consider as we work toward safeguarding our future. Until now, consumers have been asked to shoulder this responsibility, but we can all agree that companies have a much greater role to play in this space, especially when it comes to transparency. It’s a planet-protecting commitment that French pharmaceutical and dermocosmetics group Pierre Fabre is fully embracing.

That’s why the Green Impact Index was created. Developed by the Pierre Fabre Group, this program appraises all of the company’s 3,000-plus products, making it the number one cosmetic and family-health-care-product-rating tool. What’s more, it’s the only assessment that analyzes the environmental and social impacts of a product, so you can feel confident that you’re buying something that was made with a wholly sustainable perspective.

Here’s how it works: Each product is first thoroughly evaluated on 14 environmental criteria. This part of the assessment covers ecologically designed packaging and formulas—including the incorporation of recycled materials, water consumption and the ingredient biodegradation—as well as the product’s impacts, from manufacturing and transportation. Next up are the 6 social criteria, such as whether the product is made in France and whether it supports at least one human cause, like therapeutic education or the fight against social insecurity. All for a total of 20 criteria, and once the scores are tallied, each product receives an overall rating that translates to a letter grade we’re all familiar with from years of school: A, B, C or D.

Of course, none of this work is compelling without total transparency and accessibility on Pierre Fabre’s part. That’s why the Green Impact Index is regularly audited, approved and validated by AFNOR Group, an independent French leader in the field that certifies the robustness and reliability of its findings. Accessing the Index couldn’t be simpler: Just head to any Pierre Fabre brand’s website, find the page for the product you’re looking for and scroll down to find its letter rating and a detailed explanation. Now you can shop smart and do your part for the planet in a single click.
