Since the age of six, when she was cast in her first feature film, I Am Sam, Dakota Fanning has been making a place for herself in Hollywood. This spring, the 28-year-old played Betty Ford’s daughter in The First Lady, the Showtime drama series about American White House leadership, and she’ll be seen later this year in crime thriller Ripley, a series about a 1960s grifter. Plus, Japanese beauty brand Clé de Peau Beauté celebrated its 40th anniversary by welcoming the American actor and producer (she launched her production company, Lewellen Pictures, with her sister, Elle, last year) as one of its muses, alongside industry peers Ella Balinska and Diana Silvers. Fanning is also a big fan of Clé de Peau Beauté’s initiative, which has been encouraging young women around the world to pursue studies in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) since 2019.

WHAT DOES COLLABORATING WITH CLÉ DE PEAU BEAUTÉ MEAN TO YOU?

“I really love the brand’s approach to beauty, which is about unlocking the radiance within us all—highlighting each person’s uniqueness and bringing that out with the aid of its luxurious skincare products and makeup. I love that, and the company does so much philanthropic work as well, helping educate young girls around the world. That’s very important to me.”

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU WAKE UP?

“I take a probiotic. Our gut is where it all begins. It’s the foundation of our health and what comes through our skin. I swear by it.”

WHAT DOES YOUR MORNING BEAUTY REGIMEN LOOK LIKE?

“I do my routine post-exercise. I can’t be sweating off these incredible products! I cleanse with Clé de Peau Beauté cleanser— the Softening Cleansing Foam—and then I use the Serum and the Hydro-Clarifying Lotion.”

DO YOU HAVE A BEDTIME RITUAL?

“I take a bath every night. It’s not always super luxurious or long it’s just my routine and what I’ve done my whole life. It’s my one demand when I’m travelling: I like to have a bathtub. And with all the hand sanitizing going on, I recently bought these little moisturizing gloves; I load my hands with moisturizer and put them on. Sometimes I even sleep in them.”

YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT EXERCISING EARLIER. WHAT’S YOUR ROUTINE?

“Cardio barre—it’s a ballet-barre cardio class. I’ve been doing it for years. I also started playing tennis. My mom was a tennis player growing up, and now she has gotten back into it, and I’ve started too. I’m a baby tennis player, but it’s been really fun.”

WHAT’S THE BEST BEAUTY TIP YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

“Karl Lagerfeld once told me to never let anyone touch my eyebrows and to never tweeze them or change them, and I never have. So I’m au naturel brow-wise. I’ll fill them in a little bit every once in a while, but I don’t even think about them.”

WHAT DOES YOUR EVERYDAY MAKEUP LOOK LIKE?

“I love concealer, so I’ll use that, the Clé de Peau Beauté Hydrating Veil primer, which has SPF in it, a little Clé de Peau Beauté cream blush, some mascara and maybe a brow filler if I’m feeling super fancy.”

WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX?

“I’m a big, big TV girl. That is sadly not pandemic related. I’ve always been a huge Real Housewives fan, so I keep up with that. My sister’s show The Great came out right at the beginning of the pandemic, so my family had something to look forward to and watch in a not-so-fun time.”
