NYFW Reflections: Backstage Beauty at Narcisco Rodriguez, DVF & Marc by Marc Jacobs (Bare lips and nails are back, people.)
The natural look at DVF. Image via Phyto. I’m still reflecting on the primary beauty message that came across at the New York Fashion Week Spring 2013 shows. It would seem that OTT nails and bold bright lips, are going the way of the dodo.

The beauty look at Marc by Marc Jacobs, created by Dick Page for Shiseido. Nude, soft-hued or simply buffed (no polish!) nails were everywhere (Victoria Beckham, Narcisco Rodriguez, DVF, Derek Lam, BCBG). So were bare lips and natural faces. (Helmut Lang, DKNY, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein).
The look at Narcisco Rodriguez Spring 2012/13. Image via IMAXtree. At Narsciso Rodriguez, polish doyenne Deborah Lippman used her Smooth Operator 4-way nail buffer to create a “clean, minimal nail with shine but no polish at all.” This played off against the no-makeup makeup (literally) that Shiseido’s Dick Page was giving the models, using a touch of concealer – no foundation and a super light touch of nude lip colour . “I don’t care if it’s ‘now’, I care if it’s right,” he said when asked why skin, why now? (Key product: Shiseido Luminizing Satin Face Color in Soft Beam Gold.) Much as I love the idea of a simple, natural approach to beauty, I wonder how many women will be willing to toss out nail colour or forgo foundation when Spring comes around. (I feel a feature on skin and nail care in the works for one of our Spring issues!) What’s your take on the natural look?
