NYFW 2014 BACKSTAGE BEAUTY: THE PLATINUM BLONDE ICE QUEENS
Under the blinding hair and makeup lights backstage, the models with bright white blonde hair are like beauty beacons. It seems the Balenciaga Blonde trend is experiencing some aftershocks, and I couldn’t be happier about it.
Sasha Luss’ white-hot colour commands near obnoxious forms of attention. At every backstage show I attended, I watched this Russian beauty get tailed by photographers each time she stood up from a hair or makeup chair. Often, she’d oblige, but after a white she started to develop a frosty reputation. Hey, models need to eat too (and they actually do—they really do). Check out a photo I posted of her on our Instagram account the other day.

When I first spotted Ava Smith backstage at Rag & Bone, I’d truly taken surprise—it took several takes before I realized it was indeed her. Switching up her shade from
deep brown was a great strategy; it instantly gave the Chicago-native a very Scandinavian vibe. Smith debuted the new hue at New York Fashion Week when she walked for Jason Wu’s Spring 2014 show.
Charlotte Horley can thank her Danish roots for her gorgeous vanilla blonde colour.
Comeback kid (she’s taken a few years off but has returned looking fiercer than ever) Charlotte Horley’s nearly-white shade is absolutely enchanting. Paired with her sky-high cheekbones and striking smile, this Danish stunner is a photographer fave too, with a quiet, gentle voice. Even at 7:30 a.m in the morning with zero makeup on and her hair in a super tight
double French twist (that looked seriously uncomfortable), she obliged me by posing for several photos and sharing her Instagram handle (it’s
Charlotte_Hoyer if you’re wondering). She was easy to find at Peter Som, Helmut Lang, Prabal Gurung, Carolina Herrera and Diane Von Furstenberg.
