Products the beauty team can't live without
by : Elle Canada- Jan 1st, 2019
Everything ELLE Canada's beauty team can't live without.
Pantene Pro-V Intense Rescue Shots
Originally created to counter the damage caused by keratin treatments (also known as Brazilian blowouts) in Brazil, Pantene Pro-V Intense Rescue Shots ($8 for three) are coming to Canada—with an upgrade. A manufacturing breakthrough in Pantene’s Tokyo lab allowed the brand to include its highest-ever level of lipids (something that your overprocessed/overstyled hair is seriously lacking) in the product without it weighing down hair. The treatment is “virtually overdose-proof,” says Dr. Jeni Thomas, principal scientist at Pantene. “We tell people to feel free to saturate their hair—it is absorbed deeply, and the excess rinses away.”
Burt's Bees Liquid Lipsticks
At last an all-natural liquid lipstick that can hold its own against the traditional lot is here. Burt’s Bees Liquid Lipsticks ($15 each) are pigment packed (courtesy of iron oxides), hydrating but not sticky (thank you, apricot oil) and free of synthetic polymers (so don’t expect any days-long-wear claims, but we found that they held up through lunch just fine). “We use the same principles to formulate our cosmetics as we do for our skincare, using ingredients that are going to nourish your skin,” says Abena Antwi, chemist and innovation lead at Burt’s Bees. “You’re not just getting colour cosmetics but colour with care.”
Detox Mode Altogether Oil
When I take home luxurious, weighty bottles of body oil in the dregs of winter, I am convinced of my imminent ascension to hydration nirvana. And yet they sit mostly unused on my counter. I’m happy to report that Altogether Oil ($42), the first product from Detox Mode—the new in-house line from clean, green beauty mecca The Detox Market—is not one of those products. The genius spray top is the Goldilocks of jojoba- and macadamia-oil dispersal (not too much, not too little), and the oil dries down within seconds. See you on the flip side.
Marc Anthony Bye.Bye.Frizz Protecting Leave-In Conditioner
Marilisa, artistic director for Marc Anthony, taught us this super-fine-hair hack to prevent the dreaded second-day oil slick: Use a leave-in conditioner like you would use a regular rinse-out conditioner. (Spray it in and then rinse it out.) Brilliant! We love Bye.Bye.Frizz Protecting Leave-In Conditioner ($12).
Chanel No.5 Red Edition Eau de Parfum Spray
The iconic, minimalist Chanel No. 5 fragrance bottle is getting a limited-edition holiday makeover—and what befits the spirit of Coco Chanel herself more than a festive and fiery red? Chanel No. 5 Red Edition Eau de Parfum Spray ($198 for 100 mL).
Orveda The Prebiotic Emulsion
Luxury vegan skincare line Orveda is the brainchild of storied former L’Oréal Group exec Sue Y. Nabi. (During her tenure as president of Lancôme, she launched the now hugely successful fragrance La Vie Est Belle and convinced Julia Roberts to be the face.) Powered by green biotechnology, her products are packed with potent yet gentle ingredients that won’t disrupt the skin barrier, like the marine enzymes and fermented black tea kombucha in The Prebiotic Emulsion ($427). More eco cred: The entire line, both its packaging and formulation, contains less than 5 percent of anything from petrochemical origin, so it’s not adding to plastic piles in the middle of the Pacific.
Tatcha The Silk Canvas primer
“When you ask a geisha to tell you the single most important thing about her skincare, she’ll always say it’s the bintsuke wax,” says Victoria Tsai, founder of the Japanese-beauty-inspired line Tatcha. “It keeps moisture in the skin and pollution and makeup out of pores.” Made with four types of silk proteins—which have a molecular composition similar to human skin—the new Tatcha The Silk Canvas primer ($62) provides the same benefits while intensifying any pigment you put on top of it (concealer, eyeshadow, what have you) without the heaviness of actual wax on your face. Win-win. – Victoria DiPlacido, Beauty Editor
Megababe Thigh Rescue Anti-Chafe Stick
Here’s a category for which there’s covert, pent-up demand: anti-chafing products. Case in point: When Megababe Thigh Rescue Anti-Chafe Stick ($25, at geebeauty.ca) launched last summer, it sold out within the week. The soothing aloe and pomegranate-seed-extract formula—now back in stock and available in Canada—isn’t sticky and comes in packaging that’s good-looking enough to display. – Victoria DiPlacido, Beauty Editor
Aveeno Positively Radiant Dark Spot Corrector Body Cream
Aveeno Positively Radiant Dark Spot Corrector Body Cream ($14.50, at drugstores and mass-market retailers), featuring a patented soy complex that uses soybean protein to improve discoloration.- Victoria DiPlacido, Beauty Editor
Dr. Barbara Sturm Anti-Aging Body Cream
Dr. Barbara Sturm Anti-Aging Body Cream ($140, at geebeauty.ca), which is full of olive-oil-derived squalane to protect the skin barrier and antioxidant-rich purslane (a leafy-green succulent) to ward off damage from free radicals. – Victoria DiPlcido, Beauty Editor
James Read Self Tan Fool Proof Bronzing Mousse
James Read Self Tan Fool Proof Bronzing Mousse Face & Body ($32, at one2oneonline.com), an easy way to self-tan. Shower off any oils or rich creams before you apply as they can cause streaks. – Victoria DiPlacido, Beauty Editor
French Girl Lumière Rose Dorée Body Oil
Instagram artist Sara Shakeel uses Photoshop to overlay glitter and other sparkling motifs on stretch marks, and we can’t get enough. Since trying to recreate this IRL—applying glitter neatly to your body and getting it to actually stay there—might be somewhat of a Sisyphean task, try French Girl Lumière Rose Dorée Body Oil ($60, frenchgirlorganics.com) for similar joyous sparkle but with more hydration and less mess.
Garnier SkinActive Soothing Facial Mist
ELLE loves that you don’t need to ace Intro to Latin in order to understand the ingredients on the back of Garnier SkinActive Soothing Facial Mist ($10.49). All the sources are clearly listed—for example, the glycerine comes from soybean and the arginine comes from sugar. Everything in the SkinActive line is also free of parabens, silicones, mineral oil and synthetic colourants. We’ll spritz to that. – Victoria DiPlacido, Beauty Editor
Goop Incense 03 Eau de Parfum Spray
We’re partial to the warm, enveloping scent of the cedar-and-frankincense-dominant Goop Incense 03 Eau de Parfum Spray. Alas, not everything is available to ship. You’ll have to make your way across the border to get your hands on those jade eggs. (You know the ones.)
Goop Incense 03 Eau de Parfum Spray ($207), at goop.com.
Sisley Paris Hair Rituel Revitalizing Fortifying Serum
Sisley Paris, maker of many a mainstay in our skincare routines (Black Rose Skin Infusion Cream 4ever), is now vying for space in your shower. Massage the super-light (read “not greasy”) formula into the scalp when hair is dry or wet.
Sisley Paris Hair Rituel Revitalizing Fortifying Serum ($250), at holtrenfrew.com.
Mugler Aura Eau de Parfum Spray
When Thierry Mugler launched Angel in 1992, the now iconic scent was decidedly polarizing. The designer’s latest fragrance, Mugler Aura Eau de Parfum Spray, a heady, aromatic blend of the Chinese medicinal plant tiger liana and rhubarb leaf, is sure to be just as divisive. Wallflowers (literally) need not apply. —Victoria DiPlacido, assistant beauty editor
Mugler Aura Eau de Parfum Spray ($85 for 30 mL), sephora.ca.
Ralph Lauren Woman Eau de Parfum Spray
"The grand finale is a cocktail that feels decadent yet light, straddling the line between feminine and masculine—much like the perfect RL riding boot."
—Katherine Flemming, health & beauty editor
Ralph Lauren Woman Eau de Parfum Spray ($148 for 100 mL), thebay.com.
Caudalie Premier Cru The Serum
Caudalie and Dr. David Sinclair, a genetics professor at Harvard Medical School, have patented a complex, available exclusively in Premier Cru The Serum, that works to kick-start sluggish cells. Studies show that after you use the resveratrol (an antioxidant) and naturally sourced betaine (an amino acid) blend for 48 hours, your cells begin to behave like those of a springy 21-year-old. Apply it to your “French face”—from your hairline down to your décolleté— and on the backs of your hands. Caudalie Premier Cru The Serum ($179), at caudalie.ca.
Redken Clean Maniac Clean-Touch Shampoo
Micellar water, the gloriously gentle but effective cleanser that removes makeup with a swipe of a cotton pad, has now entered the world of hair care. What micellar water does to your waterproof mascara (tenderly eviscerates), micelles (a group of oil-loving surfactant molecules) in Redken Clean Maniac Clean-Touch Shampoo ($21), at redken.ca, do to pollutants and product buildup in your hair. So fresh, so clean.
WithinUs TruMarine Collagen
WithinUs TruMarine Collagen ($80, withinus.ca) for its ability to boost collagen production while treating joint pain, all in a powder (with measuring scoop) that can be mixed into water, coffee or tea. It’s free of added flavor and preservatives, and it’s derived from sustainably sourced fish (scales!) fresh from the South Pacific Ocean.
Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré
The long-time French-girl beauty secret beloved by every makeup artist, like, ever—it’s ubiquitous backstage during Fashion Week—is now available across Canada. C’est bon!
Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré ($38), at shoppersdrugmart.ca.
NARS Powermatte Lip Pigments
They glide across lips like water yet lay down impressive colour. Every single one of the 18 shades is worth a second swatch. NARS Powermatte Lip Pigments in Wild Night ($34), at sephora.ca.
Before bed, we slather on our most hydrating creams to prevent moisture loss, but we often forget about our lips, which can actually decrease in volume overnight. (Skin is thinner there, making it more susceptible.) The sesame-seed and Indian gentian extracts in Dermalogica Nightly Lip Treatment seal in hydration not only on the lips but around the entire mouth area, reducing the appearance of vertical lines that become more pronounced with age. Sweet dreams. Dermalogica Nightly Lip Treatment ($68), at dermalogica.ca.
Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Concentrate Matrix
We love the cushioning effect of Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Concentrate Matrix. A patented polymer and hyaluronic-acid combo protects the delicate eye area and acts as a buffer against natural movements (like blinking, which we do up to 10,000 times a day) that research shows can contribute to aging. Apply prior to your next eye roll. Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Concentrate Matrix ($88), at thebay.com.
Captain Blankenship Golden Waves Sea Salt Shimmer Spray
Organic sea kelp, gold mica and Atlantic sea salt are swirled together in this gilded beach spray that adds a flash of gleam to all hair colours while softening hair. Captain Blankenship Golden Waves Sea Salt Shimmer Spray ($28), at thedetoxmarket.ca.
Dove Refresh + Care Volume Dry Shampoo
“Clean hair has no guts. It doesn’t hold a curl or a wave. If I’m doing an updo, I always spray dry shampoo on my hairpins because it creates much better grip. The powder and starch get in there and cause friction so they don’t slip out.” – Mark Townsend, celebrity hairstylist for Dove.
Dove Refresh + Care
Volume Dry Shampoo ($5), at beautyboutique.ca.
The Body Shop Almond Milk & Honey Gently Exfoliating Cream Body Scrub
The Body Shop Almond Milk & Honey Gently Exfoliating Cream Body Scrub for its gentle approach to exfoliating dry skin (the formula feels like whipped butter) and its addictively nectarous fragrance, which may just be our next true love. (Please know that we will never forget you, Satsuma.) ($22), at thebodyshop.com.
La Mer Soft Fluid Long Wear Foundation
“It’s this magical, transformative colour that works on different skin tones and under-tones.” –Kayleen McAdams, makeup artist for La Mer, on the brand’s Soft Fluid Long Wear Foundation in Linen, which she has found to work on a wide range of fair to medium skin tones. For skin tones darker than olive, there are three deeper shade offerings: tawny, tan and honey. ($140), holtrenfrew.com.
Sephora Pro Dimensional Highlighting Palette
ELLE loves Sephora Pro Dimensional Highlighting Palette in Warm for its passport to JLo-level gleam in five different cream and gloss finishes. All are so satisfying to smudge under or over a favourite pigment ($45), sephora.ca.
Nutricap Dry & Damaged Hair Conditioner
Looking for a low-maintenance hair change? Take the plunge and scrape your hair into a deep side part. Run interference on frizz by prepping hair in the shower with Nutricap Dry & Damaged Hair Conditioner so hair lies smooth once it’s dry ($7), nutrisante.ca.
Dove Shower Foam
This foamy body wash invigorates skin and leaves it clean and tingly, but it’s so moisturizing that you’ll feel like you’ve been basted in cream. Dove Shower Foam taps the brand’s NutriumMoisture technology and ingredient stearic acid (a fatty moisturizing acid naturally found in your skin) so you don’t get the feeling that you’re washing all the skin-smoothing realness down the drain. It’s offered up in three scents: Shea Butter with Warm Vanilla, Cucumber with Green Tea Scent and Deep Moisture. Dove Shower Foam $7.97, at walmart.com.
Chloé Love Story
Notes of orange blossom are highlighted by flourishes of heady sandalwood and peppery jasmine in the newest iteration of this iconic feminine scent. Chloé Love Story Eau Sensuelle Eau de Parfum Spray ($112 for 50 mL), at sephora.com.
Le Mini Macaron Gel Manicure Kit
As someone who hasn’t done her own nails for longer than I care to admit, I found this DIY gel-manicure kit surprisingly simple to use. (You could still see my cuticles when I’d finished painting—usually, they’re covered for days.) The polish is a base coat, colour and top coat all in one. Each kit includes a nail colour that matches the delightful macaron-shaped LED lamp, a nail file, a cuticle stick and enough presoaked pads to remove polish once. Apply two coats, cure for 30 seconds each and forget about your nails for the next week (at least). Le Mini Macaron Gel Manicure Kit ($45 each), at leminimacaron.com.
Bite Beauty Multistick
Bite Beauty Multistick tints lips, cheeks and eyes with a lightweight swath of rich colour. The formula is powder filled (35 percent) and silicone-free, which means the finish lands smack dab in the middle of shiny and matte. Bite Beauty Multistick ($28 each), at sephora.ca.
Saje Pocket Farmacy
Saje Pocket Farmacy ($59.95, saje.ca) is wee enough to tuck into your Fendi micro-ruffle bag should you need a little extra help after the taxing holiday-party season. A few dabs of these essential-oil infusions help manage headaches, indigestion, a zapped immune system and how-am-I-going-to-pay-this-credit-card-balance anxiety.
David Kirsch Wellness Co. B-12 Spray
Keeping the stress dragon tamed when you’re skipping sleep (oh, zee parties!) is harder than getting a ticket to the Drake and Rihanna #AtLastLuvFest2017. (It could happen, yes?) David Kirsch Wellness Co. B-12 Spray ($20, at NET-A-PORTER.com) is a mist that you spritz into your mouth to sharpen mental focus and protect your immune system.
Moon Juice Brain Dust
Are you one of those “But first, coffee” Snappers? (Us too.) Increase the health benefits of those beans by stirring a teaspoon of Moon Juice Brain Dust ($55, at NET-A-PORTER.com) into your Americano. It contains a medley of memory-preserving additives, such as maca, lion’s mane, ginkgo, shilajit and organic astragalus. And if that’s not good enough for you, Goop calls it “magic.”
RMS Beauty Swift Shadows
RMS Beauty Swift Shadows (shown in EM-64 and EM-68), a tightly edited range of micro-shimmer shadows that contain moisturizing organic jojoba oil and buriti oil. Apply with a wet brush for a deeper shade. RMS Beauty Swift Shadows ($28), at beautyboutique.ca.
Rodan + Fields Redefine Age Shield Hand Balm
"Sun protection for hands is tricky. An SPF lotion leaves palms sticky, but going without means a future of sun-wizened skin and age spots. I consider the discovery of this clever purse-size stick, which I can swipe across the backs of my hands, one of my greatest beauty finds." –Vanessa Craft, beauty director Rodan + Fields Redefine Age Shield Hand Balm ($51), at rodanandfields.com.
“I recently got highlights for the first time since my All Saints stage in ’98, so my hair is a bit parched. I’ve put it on a diet of Kevin.Murphy Repair-Me.Rinse. It’s boosted with amino-acid-rich aloe vera and green-pea protein for moisture.” –Carli Whitwell, health & beauty editor Kevin.Murphy Repair-Me.Rinse ($45), at kevinmurphy.com.au
Jouviance Glyco Laser Soft Peel Lotion 10%
“This 8-percent-glycolic-acid, 2-percent-BHA lotion is my new fave way to exfoliate. I put it on before bed and use SPF 50 in the a.m. (Acids can sensitize skin to sun.) Thanks to slow-release technology, I’m never red or peeling.” –Victoria DiPlacido, associate beauty editor Jouviance Glyco Laser Soft Peel Lotion 10% ($40), at jouviance.com.
Jason Wu for Caudalie Beauty Elixir
"The beloved face mist that is on every beauty editor’s desk is getting a new look for fall. Designer (and Caudalie superfan) Jason Wu designed a limited-edition stencilled-lace bottle for the signature formula of rosemary, rose-orange blossom and grape-pulp extract." Limited-Edition Jason Wu for Caudalie Beauty Elixir ($53), at caudalie.com.
Dermalogica Daily Resurfacer
"Exfoliation is a (major) key to skin success. I travel with these single-use buffers, which fit on a fingertip and are infused with alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids – leaving skin as smooth as the Snapchat beauty filter.” –Vanessa Craft, beauty director Dermalogica Daily Resurfacer ($96.50 for a pack of 35), at dermalogica.ca.
First Aid Beauty Detox Eye Roller

I’ve smartened up since then; I use this cooling metal roller containing caffeine to deflate puffiness and smooth fine lines.” –Carli Whitwell, health & beauty editor First Aid Beauty Detox Eye Roller ($32), at sephora.ca.
KaePop x ColourPop Cosmetics Ultra Matte Lip and Lippie Pencil in Chi
