Always dreamed of owning a Birkin? Hermès has made those fantasies a little more practical for beauty fanatics with a Birkin-adjacent product: a lipstick line. It’s the first time in the French brand’s 183-year history that they are venturing into makeup.
Launching in March, the Rouge Hermès line will feature 24 shades in both matte and satin finishes. The matte shades are Hermès suede-inspired, while the satin colours pay tribute to the iconic Kelly bag‘s soft leather. Dusty rose, bold red and bright orange appear to be just a few of the shades, with a choice between black and gold packaging and some multi-coloured tubes. It doesn’t get much chicer than this.
Price for the lipsticks are marked at $67 USD, while refills (did we mention the packaging is refillable?) will cost $42 USD. Canadian pricing is not yet available. The attention to detail and product development is pretty astonishing, with colours chosen based on 75,000 silk swatches and the packaging made from the same metal hardware that is used on their bags, as reported by the Wall Street Journal magazine.
The pricing is steep, but it’s not unheard of: Hermès joins Tom Ford, Sisley-Paris, Kilian and Christian Louboutin, to name a few brands with luxury lipsticks retailing above the $60 mark.
Hermès is set to release new beauty products every six months after the initial lipstick launch – budget accordingly.
