Less than a year after launching Glossier Play – a glitzier, bolder counterpart to the main line of products last March – Glossier founder and CEO Emily Weiss has announced that they are nixing the line.

Devoted Glossier Play fans needn’t worry, though. According to the Business of Fashion, some of the Play products will still be sold, they will just be merged with the core lineup of makeup and skincare products.

Weiss told BOF that the decision to axe Play was due mainly to lower sales. “[We thought] why don’t we create a different brand…so that it’ll differentiate more intense makeup product from less intense makeup product,” Weiss said. “The realisation we had was, ‘Huh, we could have just launched more makeup products.’”

They also received some flack about the Play products’ excessive packaging and the fact that their Glitter Gelée is not biodegradable. Weiss announced in a statement that the product will be discontinued as of March and further sustainability efforts will be implemented.

Glossier’s cult favourite products include the Boy Brow gel brush and their Balm Dot Com lip and body salve. Glossier has expanded on these products, offering different shades/flavours over time – and according to BOF, they will do the same with an eyeliner and lip lacquer from the Play line.

Whether you’re into a bare-faced look or you still stand by the Play products, the point is that you can still have both.
