You know you have to wear it. And you know you have to reapply (no matter how high that SPF level is). But just as a refresher you still might be missing out on some need-to-know sunscreen facts and tips. We round up the essentials to make sure you don’t get burned this summer.

Know your UVBs from your UVAs
We’ve all heard about UVBs over and over again and how we need to protect our skin from these damaging rays. But the type of rays that cause more than just sunburns and tans? UVAs – and they are the route cause of major sun damage. “It is UVA that leads to sun damage, aging and most importantly, melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. SPF ratings tell the consumer nothing about UVA protection,” says Dr. Pearlman, a women’s health expert at Pearl Rejuvenation Medical Vitality Clinic in Toronto. Check your labels to make sure you’re covered on both UVB and UVA fronts.

Pick the right sunscreen
If you’re known to be a sun worshipper (you know who you are), don’t think a spray or water-proof formula will have you covered all day long. It’s often not enough. Cream forms are best for even coverage and staying power.

Apply the right amount

Most skin care experts agree to this rule of thumb: A teaspoon of daylight defense product for the face and a one-ounce (shot-glass sized) dollop of sunscreen for the body should be applied every two hours when outdoors.

Sunscreen myth I need a base tan before I go on vacation so I don’t burn.
Sunscreen facts “There is no such thing as a base tan,” says Dr. Doris Day, clinical associate professor of dermatology at NYU Langone Medical Center. “If you don’t want to get a sunburn on vacation, take a siesta in the middle of the day and have some fun,” she says with a laugh. “But it’s not the time to be out in UV rays.”

Scary sun stats
– One in every four Canadians does not use sunscreen.

– Almost 50 percent of Canadians think it’s important to get a base tan before a vacation.

– Over 60 percent of Canadians think they look healthier with a tan.
