Hourglass Cosmetics announced today that it will become completely vegan by 2020. The luxury makeup-skincare brand already has a large range of vegan cosmetics, but plans to replace ingredients that are animal-derived — most notably beeswax and carmine (red dye made from beetles’ wings) — with ingredients that are free from any animal by-products. “It is not a simple solution,” says Carisa Janes, founder and CEO of Hourglass in a statement. “But we are dedicated to putting in the time and effort it will take to find vegan alternatives for our product formulas.”

Although the brand is already 100% cruelty-free, Janes wants Hourglass to be “the first completely vegan luxury cosmetics brand in the world.” To celebrate its new commitment, Hourglass released a Limited Edition Vegan Leather Bag in partnership with the Nonhuman Rights Project. One hundred percent of profits will be donated to the Nonhuman Rights Project.
