The piercing, nail and hair salons to visit in Manhattan's Lower East Side.
Hortūs Nailworks & Sugaring
210 Forsyth Street
The place: A green refuge in the concrete jungle that is Manhattan. The lighting—in the form of hanging bulbs placed throughout the space—is mercifully soft, and tables and chairs are made of reclaimed wood. The music? Jazz only. The result is a blissfully calm environment that stands in stark contrast to the club-like energy of some salons in nearby SoHo.
Ask for: The Hortūs signature manicure. Hands are buffed with sea salt then thoroughly massaged. The selection of 3- and 5-free nail polishes is extensive, and if you arrive with polish already on, it's soaked off with a soy-based remover that's completely sans acetone. (Your nose, and nails, will thank you.)
New York Adorned
47 2nd Ave
The place: A renowned tattoo and piercing parlour in New York City, with a revolving list of artists who come to work out of the space.
Ask for: Take the time to talk to your piercer. "Before, people would just point to a spot and be like, 'I want a piercing there,'" says Adrian Castillo, a piercer at Adorned with over a decade of experience. "Now, people have a picture that they use as a reference like, 'I want my ear to look like that,'"—and it won't always work based on your anatomy or lifestyle (if you often wear helmets, for example). "I would say don't come in with something set in stone," he says. "Also, do some research about the person who is piercing you." If pain is a big factor (i.e. you want none of it), they can recommend beginner piercings—but remember, nerves aren't always a bad thing.
179 Ludlow Street
The place: One of Drybar's newest NYC outposts where they offer no cuts or colours—just blowouts. Because it's just recently opened, you can still score a regular weekly blowout with your stylist of choice at a time that works for you—a luxury when you consider longstanding clients can often scoop up primo spots at busy locations.
Ask for: All blowouts are the same cost, whether you're after mermaid waves or Kim K-style sleek, so go with whatever you're feeling that day. (Updos and braids are priced separately.) There is an option to add-on a ten-minute head massage during your shampoo—trust us when we say this is worth it.
