When I asked Maybelline New York’s lead makeup artist Grace Lee her favourite beauty trends for fall 2017, she paused. “Beauty trends are not like they were before,” said the artist backstage at Toronto Women’s Fashion Week. “We used to wait the full six months after fashion week to rock the trend, and then everyone would be wearing it. Now with social media, it’s more immediate; I think everything goes.” So we chatted about the products that were sitting right there in her kit. Below, Lee picks four seasonless Maybelline products she has in heavy rotation as she works on international fashion weeks.

1. The easiest foundation to apply

“This is SO good,” said Lee when we bonded over our mutual love for the Maybelline Dream Cushion Foundation. “I love that it is medium to opaque coverage. It’s buildable, but it still gives skin texture. I know there are a lot of women out there who want to put coverup on, but then they end up looking like they have tons of makeup on. This just looks like even, beautiful skin. A lot of the models have been wearing this.”

2. A strobing stick

“I love the strobing sticks. I have a really strong aesthetic for skin, I like highlighting and making sure the skin looks good. I am known for that. We are seeing less contour though, contour has just gotten to a whole other level with Instagram and Kim Kardashian, there is almost a shock level to really go nuts. You can accentuate your cheekbones, but you don’t need to create a whole new face.”

3. A multipurpose lip gloss

“Gloss is still hot. We are still seeing glossy eyelids, gloss used as a highlight, and glossy lips. If you can wear it and it looks good, rock it!”

4. A bright lip colour

“A poppy lip is always fun, especially if you are stuck in a winter rut. When it starts to get a little nicer out and you are seeing more sun, a coral lip always makes me feel happy. Something not typical, something a little bit more spring.”
