Low maintenance beauty from day to night
Just like how wearing a uniform makes getting dressed in the morning a quick and thoughtless process, establishing a similar beauty uniform will help with an effortless makeup application—and to perfect your look over time. To start? “Establish a look for yourself,” says Sabrina Rinaldi, a celebrity makeup artist based in Toronto.
And experiment with different looks until you achieve the best one. Rinaldi shares her best makeup tips to help with narrowing down a low maintenance beauty routine from morning to night.
Your low maintenance beauty bag
First things first: to create quick, foolproof beauty looks in the morning you’ll need to have the proper tools on hand. Create a smooth, primed base on skin so that makeup is applied cleanly and stays perfect looking throughout the day. Try Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentrè. “It gives skin suppleness without the oiliness,” says Rinaldi about the face lotion.
“A good tinted moisturizer is always good to have,” she adds. Follow up with a concealer, and foundation, if needed, to quickly round out a flawless complexion. Set everything in place with a loose powder—try Too Faced Primed and Poreless Powder—and compact cream blush for a rosy finish.
FOUNDATION TIPS: Choose the right shade for your skin tone
To quickly brighten tired-looking eyes, invest in a lash curler (try Shu Uemura’s eyelash curler) and a good lash-lengthening mascara (Rinaldi recommends CoverGirl LashPerfection or Clump Crusher mascaras). And add a tinted lip balm to keep lips moisturized. The key to a quick yet polished beauty look is to take the time beforehand to figure out what you want. “Find out what works for you and adapt it as your everyday look,” she says.
Easy morning beauty routine
The trick to creating an effortless a.m. beauty look? “Not to look too made up,” Rinaldi advises. “Correcting is your main thing.” The focus is to even out skin tone and texture. Start with a tinted moisturizer (but if your skin is more oily, opt for a powder foundation instead). Then simply curl lashes, apply a coat of mascara and lip balm (try CoverGirl Lip Smoothies, “they’re the new age Lip Smacker,” says Rinaldi). “It’s no-makeup makeup,” she says.

Low maintenance night look
To bump up the look at night, add an interesting statement eye: try a winged eyeliner or smoky eye. Apply a kohl eyeliner pencil along the lash line and blend out for a soft, worn-in look. For a bold smoky eye, smudge liner along the lid as a base and add a shimmery jade green or champagne eye shadow. Add an ivory highlighter along the brow bone. “It takes a few minutes for high impact,” says Rinaldi.
Makeup tips: How to achieve a SMOKY EYE
To help your skin stay fresh until evening, especially for an after-work event or date, set your powder foundation heavier in the morning to absorb excess oils throughout the day. “Not only is matte skin on trend this season,” Rinaldi says as one of her top long-lasting makeup tips. “But it will last longer too.” For maximum longevity, opt for a powder foundation instead of liquid formulation.
And swap out your cream blush for a rosy powder equivalent too. “Add an eye-catching statement lip in for an instantly fresher look,” she says.
The statement lip
The easiest way to achieve a full, perfect pout is to use a lip liner, says Rinaldi. “You’re using it to etch out the shape of your lips, not as a full lipstick,” she reminds. Lean your elbow on top of your sink counter or desk (in front of mirror, always!) and rest your pinky finger on your chin to further help steady your hand.

Apply the liner to the lip on an angle, not straight on, and push along the side of the pencil in short, gentle strokes. Move from the middle of the lip to the inner corner. Lightly fill in the rest of the lip lightly with the pencil. “It will give the lipstick something to adhere to,” says Rinaldi. Then gently blot on your lipstick overtop. “Then you won’t have to worry about going over the lip line,” she says.
